Getting the Wheeling Fever

Hey guys, I am in the middle of a little preventative maintenance. I am in the middle of replacing the timing chain on my truck. I have stripped the block down, and now I am having trouble getting the crank bolt to break loose. I wedged a breaker bar in on the drivers side frame rail like the write up in the tech section said and then bumped the starter. Nothing.
If I am going about this wrong please tell me. If anybody has any suggestions, I am wide open.
Oh and while I'm at it, how many bolts hold the AC bracket on. I unbolted the three on the front, is there one on the side that I need to loosen so that it can be moved to the side.
Thanks a ton,
Matt

u bumped the starter and it wouldnt turn it? like the starter just stopped? This happened to me. Try blocking the wheels, maybe even put it in 4wd, then get as big of a bar as you can under there and put some muscle into it... Itll come off. erick

sorta, I bumped it once and it seemed to turn over a little, but the bolt wasn't loose enough to turn. The last time I bumped it, the engine lurched, but i don't think it turned over. so in effect, it is kinda like either the starter doesn't have enough torque to turn it over, or my battery is not up to the task.
the starter isn't that old, but that doesn't mean much to me. It is a parts store starter, and I haven't had alot of luck with them.
Would it be a bad idea to try it on the passenger side, and give the breaker bar a little gap so that when the engine turned over, the bar would catch and the shock load might break the bolt loose. My biggest fear with that is that I will shear the crank bolt, and then I am up the creek!!
Anybody??
Thanks,
Matt

Muscle...Oh yeah!!
I was so caught up in trying to use the starter that I completely forgot about locking the wheels and using the rolling mass to hold the pulley.
Thanks a ton for reminding me!

Ok so I locked it in and chocked the wheels and started turning the crank and realized that I was turning it opposite of its normal rotation.
So the question i have before I go much further is this:
If I continue to turn it counter clockwise, will the drive train tighten up and catch even in the opposite direction, and will I hurt anything by loading the engine components in the opposite direction. Since I am replacing the timing chain and gears i'm not to worried about that, but what about the other internals??
Thanks again,
Matt

If you block the wheels well and put it in 4th gear nothing should move that much. Just remember to get it set back to TDC for the 1st cylinder after you pop the crank bolt loose. erick

I just dealt with this myself. I had to take the bolt out twice, as I didn't have oil pressure the first time I tried.
Both times mine came off with elbow grease. The first time, I used a 3/8 drive - no problem. The 2nd time, that same rachet broke internally on me while trying the same maneuver. I went and bought a 1/2" breaker bar and used a 1/2" to 3/8" adapter with a 3/8" drive 19mm socket... I then sheared the adapter... Ran to the parts store and found a 1/2" drive 19mm socket... Used more elbow grease and thank the good Lord it finally gave it up.... I was way worried for a moment though.

Well what I had hoped would be a saturday project has turned into a big deal.
4th gear huh. So is having it in 1st gear and in 4 lo to much gear. I figured that the lower you went the better it would hold. Have I been wrong in my thinking. I even had my fiancee sit in the cab and hold the brakes and no luck.
I am going to enlist a larger tank compressor tomorrow and give it a hit with the impact. I have a small one, but it just doesn't have the volume to turn it.
I went to home depot and got: 1st.. some 1/8th inch plate and tried to manufacture a wedge to hold the crank....BENT IT. 2nd.. a piece of 1/8th inch angle iron and manufactured another "heavier duty" wedge.. BENT IT and the 8mm bolts that had it bolted to the crank pulley.
I am hoping with a bigger compressor I will be able to break it loose.
I will keep you all up on the happenings.
Thanks again for all your help

The first time i took it off i put a 19mm 1/2 inch drive on the thing, then slid the bar from my floor jack (about 4ft long) over the ratchet with the truck in 4lo and the wheels chocked and i broke it loose with one hand... you need leverage! thats all...
