22REbuild Time ... #716313 04/17/06 05:28 AM

Well, I pretty much knew that it was more than just the timing chain guides, I figured I'd be tearing the 22re back apart to pull the head ... but it looks as though the knock is deeper than that.

This morning, I used a stethoscope trying to locate the exact location of the loud knock and although it sounded like it was mainly comming from the top end it was pretty noisy from the bottom end as well.

Somewhat disappointed, I began to strip 'er down, getting ready to pull engine. Have you ever noticed how it's much easier taking the same things apart a second time? ...

It's funny how disappointment can soon turn to joy as you realize that you're going to end up with a nice rebuilt engine in the long run.

Any tips on pulling this baby out?
Radiator's out, manifolds will be off, alt/ PS/ AC will be off. I figure on renting or borrowing a cherry picker.

I've got 4WD/IFS so I suppose I need to drop that down.

Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks ...

i will be curious as to how this progresses as well. Was it difficult taking the manifolds off?

So far, I only have the Exhaust manifold off. That was pretty straightforward and surprisingly easy. I hit the 3 bolts that connect the manifold to the front pipe of the exhaust system with WD-40 and they were by far the worst, but I just worked the nuts off a little then back on, back and forth, getting them to back off a little more each time.

The nuts and bolts that hold the Ex manifold were slightly stubborn, but not bad.

I didn't have the daylight left to take off the intake but suspect that it will be an excercise in contortion but very do-able.

It all definately gets easier once you get some things out of the way.

I wonder if I need to remove the A/C condenser coil, I don't see that I'll gain much room by removing it, I can protect it with a piece of plywood when I pull the engine out.

on the AC, just from my timing chain experience, you can remove that and set it off to the side, on your frame where you can tie it up. You won't even have to re-charge it. There are 3 bolts that hold it in. From top to bottom, a 14mm, a 12 mm and then another 14mm.

As I understand it, the exhaust manifold is prone to stripping out the bolt holes. Makes me a bit nervous.

Need a Spot
Maybe you are already past this point but I like to pull the engine wiring harness from the pass kick panel and pull the whole engine wiring and all. The only thing I remove is the tranny bolts, motor mount bolts, AC compressor, radiator, fan shroud, ps pump, alt wiring, starter, misc hoses, seperate exhaust from exhaust manifold and throttle cables. I think that covers most of it. I place it on an engine stand and go to work. It was alot easier to remove things while the engine was out of the truck. Just an idea. I just did this on my 88 and it worked great and was easier on my back.

Good Luck!

Very helpful stuff WY!
Sounds like a good plan.
Will the pan clear the front differential (4WD IFS)

I have no doubt that removing the intake (EFI) etc. is much easier on an engine stand.

A friend is lending me the engine stand, should make life a lot easier.

Thanks for the info!!

Pull your hood and make life easier on yourself. Leave as much attached to the engine as possible, pulling only those items that will get in the way or have fluid resevoirs attached via hoses (A/C, PS). The engine will clear the everything up front, use a short lead chain so that the hoise will lift high enough to clear the radiator core support. Once engine is out of the rig and on the stand, drain the remaining oil/coolant and strip her down for the trip to the machine shop.

I've done this a couple times ( ) so have learned a few tricks on quick easy removal/install. Best advice I can give you: Take your time, pay attention and dont force anything.

And get a digital camera to take lots of photos of stuff before you take it apart!
You will be amazed how a simple picture can save you time and money.

Best $300 I've spent so far.....

Thanks All!
Good stuff, I appreciate the tips, it's been quite a few years since I did this last, it's all comming back to me, but it helps to hear from those who have done this all recently. I'll be hittin' ya up with a question here and there to be sure I'm staying on track.

Many thanks ... this is a great forum, glad I found it ... just what the doctor ordered ...

i bought my truck, it aquired a horrible rod knock (broken timing chain guides clocked oil pickup ) on the highway. towed the truck home, had the motor out rebuilt and back in the truck in 9 days, running in 12 (was waiting for dealer parts )

i know this is not how most 17yr olds spend their winter break but i had fun and learned alot... trucks been running good since... thank goD!!!
