Last year I put my third set of Bridgestone Dueler 684 tires on my 94 Amigo, these are the type tires that came on it originally when I bought it new. Never had a problem until a week ago, when the right rear slung it's tread at 60 mph, damaging the right rear of the truck. The heavy 10/32 worth of tread beat the crap out of the rear quarter panel (12/32 is new). Lucky for my son who was driving, the tire did not loose pressure and he was able to get it pulled over before major damage could occur (roll over?). I started checking the web and have found several instances where this particular tire, in various sizes, have been shedding their tread (usually the right rear?). I have replaced the remaining tires, at my expense, with Dueler 689's, they have not had the numerous reports of tread loss and cracks that the 684's have had. Will include a picture of the tire carcase still inflated on the rim later, just wanted to get the word out in case you have these tires on your vehicle, you could be risking your life and the lives of your loved ones. Contacted Bridgestone and their rep wants me to ship the tire to them at my expense so they can tell me, like they have told everyone else I have contacted that had this happen, that the tire damage is some how my fault, which is bull! I have always kept my tire at 32 to 35 psig. People I have contacted have been told by Bridge stone reps that they ran their tires at low pressure at some time.

On the 689 tires Bridge stone added an extra nylon belt to help prevent this tread shedding. Dueler 684 - two steel and two polyester belts. Dueler 689 - two steel, two polyester, AND a nylon belt.

You might want to file a complaint here.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

If there is a problem with this model tire maybe they can pressure the manufacturer to reimburse part of the cost of replacement tires and the cost to repair the damage to your vehicle.

Mike, I cannot imagine that there is somebody out there who would put third set of 684's in his truck... It's so fragile that they were completely gone on my truck after just 10K miles, with very little light off-roading I did that time. Third set ... mmm ... let me put it in this way: you definitely like challenges in your life if this is true, than it's time for the 4th set

I own 5 Isuzu's, I thought challenges were a given! If 684's were original equipment, why not stick with them? Until I found out there was a safety concern.

'94, and '00 Amigos and '00, 01 Rodeos. Rodeo springs and aftermarket 'hard top on 94. Aisin hubs OME 919's on the 2000 Amigo. 2000 and 2001 Rodeos have OME 912's and Aisin. Smoother ride with the OME 919's???

I ran the stock 684s for about 30k and swaped them with another set of new 684 (i didn't pay for these, another rodeo buddy gave them to me when he went to 33s). The second set lasted 50k+ since they never got used off-road.

In all that time the tires worked great. But when it came time to replace them I went w/ 694 Dueler A/T. This was a huge improvement all the way around.

High mileage on the 684 is not rare. My cousin got 75k on his 2wd Rodeo.

Just because they were OE does not mean they are a good tire...they were just the company that offered the cheapeast price to Isuzu on that particualr day.

guys, it's like we are talking about differents tires here... on my set, I had the following problems:

- many tread chunks where simply gone by 10K,
on all four tires, so that's not about a single
defective tire fault. The tires were looking
like a mouth with missed teeth.

- there were multiple deep cracks in the tread
rubber, so deep below the tread surfice that
I was afraid that the tires are going to
start loosing air.

- one tire was replaced becouse the sidewall
was damaged by a light hit to a curb.

- one tire was replaced due to the sidewall
damaged by a bush - a wooden stick went
through the sidewall ! That was a very unusual
sort of damage. The sidewalls are so fragile.

- there were several flat tires occasions,
I just got sick of fixing them.

- surprisingly, the tread was still deep.
So, I had to replace them not becouse of
the tread wear, but becouse of all the damages
I had on them, and it was too expensive to keep
them and to fix them continiously.

Those tires were a joke. Due to the damage replacements, I had totally 6 of them, all exibited the same behavior. When you guys are talking about 75K or 82K on them, I just think that this is about different tires, not the same 684s I had...

Sorry for the long message, I really do not think
that these tires are worth this discussion.

The solution is simple - don't keep posting if you don't think they are worth the discussion.
