halfway into my aisin install

took off flange covers, yadda yadda, put manuals on

c-clips have a gap behind them with the manuals on. doe this mean i have the inner part of the hub on backwards or is this correct?

if there is supposed to be a small gap behind the c-clips do i need to install some sort of spacer behind them or not and if so, what kind of spacer?

I remember there being some sort of very slim washer/spacers behind the clip...but it's been a while since I looked at them.

Maybe someone can chime in with a more definite answer.

Yeah there are some very thin spacers that go on the end of the shaft before the c-clip goes on. I don't think I even have mine any more and AFAIK it doesn't hurt to NOT have them. There should not be very much of a gap, even without the spacers. Just a few thousndths. Any more than that and I'd guess something is not installed correctly.

Ummm... yes, you ARE supposed to have those shims installed
if the specs are out and it CAN hurt something.
If I remember correctly, there should only be 0 - .005" gap.
Anything more than that is supposed to be shimmed.
I think the shims come in .005, .010, .020, & .030".
The shims keep the axle from bumping in and out of the hub
and keeps the spine at the correct depth in to the hub spline.
If that spline is not at the correct depth, it can chew
the end of the axle up... That generally doesn't happen
unless the clip comes off (which it can do from to much gap
causing the axle to slap the clip)...

so i figure they must have blown apart somehow in the mail. the "gap" was a result of the entire hub being wrongly assembled.

both hubs needed to be completely rebuilt - gawd. what a frustrating mess. but as far as i know it works on the one hub.

i can't get the allen key bolts to budge...

Especially if they're used hubs, it's smart to go through them with your own eyes to make sure they are in working order and they are ready to go when you install them. Sure, it can be a little nerve racking, but you'll get them done.

As for the allen bolts, try using a little PB blaster or penetrating oil to losen them up. Use a ratchet and socket with the correct allen size head. You'll get better leverage. Is the tire on the ground or is it up in the air where it can spin when you try to tighten? You can apply a litle bit of anti-seize to the bolts before you re-install them.

If you really can budge the bolts and the hubs are off the truck, place the hub in a vise, then you can apply some force with two hands to the ratchet. Or you can use a hammer to gently persuade (tap) the allen key.

Have you seen the thread over on Pirate? i believe i put it on the Planet a little while ago. Im not on my normal computer, so i dont have my favorites list on here, but a quick search or "Aisin Hub Rebuild" on google should bring it up to the top. They are really very simple, and there isnt much that can be put together incorrectly. About the only thing that can go wrong is one of the springs isnt sitting right on the clutch pawl, and that can lead to the hub not disengaging (or engaging in the first place, for that matter.) correctly.
Also, if you find that you do need some of those spacers, contact matt at Indy4x. He has some, and can hook you up well. The way he explained it to me, some of the hubs had those spacers, some of them didnt. Yours needs it, for whatever reason. I wouldnt put them on my truck without one on there.

Here's a couple links that might help:

http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/aisin/

As for pirate4x4, I think the SEARCH function is disabled for nonmember...uhmm, nonpayers <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" /> I was (and still am) a registered user, but they didn't impress me enough as a whole that I wanted to give them money.
