My 1985 'Project' 4Runner is needing a different rear end. I saw today there was a 99-03 4x4 Taco in a junkyard with what looks like a good rear end. I know the advantages of a '86 rear end however is there any reason a Taco rear diff wouldn't fit under my '85 Runner?
Thoughts? Ideas?

Spring perches might not line up.
Differential is an 8.4" unit, so it will not be swappable with the 8" which is what you have up front. (unless you find a elocker rear end, then its an 8".)

So, would the only difference be in the 8.4" vs. the 8"? Perches can be moved - is it a stronger, better diff than say one from a 86-88? It looked like the diff had an 'extended' rear portion to it. I didn't see a locker though so I am not 100% on the year/specs of the rear axle in the taco.

you can put the entire axle under the truck, both rear ends are 8" but the taco rear has a different bolt pattern as it mates up to the housing. The taco in theory is stronger, same rear on T100s and Tundras. By little brother is putting a Taco axle under his 85 4runner, however his is the TRD e-locker axle.

the diff is supposedly a stronger design, as the carrier bearing cap is a 1 piece girdle rather than 2 seperate caps like the regular 8". however i've heard that the housings themselves are weaker than the truck/4runner housings.
they are also somewhere around 60" wide, compared to 58" for an IFS truck.

Ok guys - thanks for the thoughts! I also found a reqar from a 86 4R that I could pick up for $300 w/ 220K+ miles on it - it's a toss up to wat to do. If I get the chance I will go and snap a picture or two of it and post em up (of the taco rear!)

I run a Taco axle.
The perch width is the same but the brake stuff is on opposite sides (not to hard to change).
The diff is either the E-locker or the T100/Tundra syle. I'd much rather have that axle in my truck than an overpriced 300k axle that probably needs a rebuild.
The housings are made the same, so one shouldn't be stronger than the other.

I know this is against the grain for most toy folks but I am putting in a Dana44 rear out of a '95 Isuzu Rodeo. Same width as the IFS rears plus it comes with disc brakes, 4.10's and matching 6 lug pattern. Picked it up For $100 at the local pull-and-save. I haven't checked the perches yet but it was cheaper than putting discs on a toy axle.
