Bought a "good used" 4.88 4cyl 3rd with a Truetrac. It feels smooth, no visible defects. About 10 thou ringear backlash. Tiny bit of pinion end play. I tightened the carrier bearing adjusters by 5 notches, Probably could go another notch. Ringear has "A" shaped logo. Looks like bottom half of "A", is an "M". Stamped on RG is 39X8 11060/98. Number "52" has been etched on RG. Anything else I should do or check ??
Any way to determine which Truetrac is in there ??

5 notches each side <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> Good job.
I don't recognize the logo you described....doesn't sound like a Genuine so that's all that really counts.
Unknown about the Truetrac.

Yes, it is a 4.88.
National drive train shows 2 TrueTracs for 4 cyl 3rds, a front only and a rear only.

I was hoping to determine which one without taking it apart.
Sorry, no pics. I can't see anything that might identify it.

Zuk,,, With your knowledge, experience, and judgement of Toyota 3rd's, I would expect you to beat me every time. I probably COULD go another notch. Somewhere on the net I read to stop tightning when the carrier caps start to spread as measured with a dial indicator.

I have throughly examined and find no identifying marks except as stated.

As far as the TureTrac, it should behave similar to a locker. Turn one axle and the other shoulc turn the same direction. Difference from an auto-locker would be noted when holding one axle still and turn the other axle back and forth. Instead of clunking to an abrupt stop (like a locker), the TT will gradually tighten up and stop as the axle is turned back and forth.

The TrueTrac is a limited slip. It functions just like any other LSD out there. But its designed different, as in no clutches or friction plates. It has helical gears that transfer torque to the wheel with traction. It supposedly will never wear out like a conventional LSD.
