How should I mount my spare in the bed of my truck? #718221 04/23/06 02:40 AM

Well the original owner of my truck ripped out the factory spare tire mount and bolted up some aluminum plate with a couple long bolts in place of it. Might work ok for the stock tire. But my 33x12.5 swampers are a bit more tire to fit there. I feel better mounting it in the bed. How have others secured their spares for offroading? Don't want it flopping out on me. And I have a tonnaue cover, so I can not stand it up against the bed side.

Simple and effective. I welded a chain to the middle of my bed and locked it down thru one of the holes for the lugs. Keeps my tire secure and keep Johnny fingers from helping himself.

Mine as you can see is pretty similar to MnMsToY. I used the Fabtech flatbed mount. It's pretty sweet I never have to worry about the tire moving at all. But when your bobbed you have no room. Who needs it anyway ..

Body Damage is Cool
Since you have a cover on ur bed this probably wouldn't work, but for other people's reference for spare tire mounts, theres always the Fabtech carrier. new they're $$$ but I was lucky to find one used for a good price (also from a friend): [Linked Image]

Or, it could be easily modified to lay flat.. all you would need is the threaded ~1" bolt and nut type thingy that clamps the tire down. Or if you order a real thick long bolt to go through the center hole of the rim it would be easy to weld up a flat mount carrier.. like the Fabtech minus the slant.

Here you can see how the tire is actually clamped down on the fabtech - the round aluminum piece clamps the rim down on the gloss black frame part when you turn the handle:

don't know if you have a hitch reciever or not, but i know a guy who made his own mounting that would go right into the reciever. It just chilled behind the tailgate, really neat setup.

not sure if any companies sell anything like that or if you wanted to make your own, but its another idea for mounting your spare.
hope this helps,

Thanks for the ideas and pictures guys

I searched google quite a bit. And found that fabtech makes two spare tire mounts, the angled one and a flat one. I think for this upcoming weekend event I'll just strap the tire down and later on I will order up the flat spare tire mount. Think it goes for around $80. And I could fab up my own, but why bother when someone offers a very nice looking one at a decent price?
