Getting the Wheeling Fever
Does it make sense to change out the tie rods when I rebuild the front axle? This is an '83 22r pickup. The steering is a little loose and I figured I'd swap those at some point (which I've never done before) and figure it might as well be at the same time.

I've been looking for info on replacing the tie rods but haven't found much other than the FSM. What simple things would I want to replace to help tighten the wandering? Idler arms? Pittman arm?

the loose steering means that the drag link may need to be adjusted. unless the tie rod ends themselves are sloppy, you can leave them be.

How is that adjusted? I see it in the FSM but only see installation and removal.

I just figured due to the age that the tie rod ends could use replacing. It looks like I'm halfway there once the axle is apart.

Screw slots in the ends of the draglink that can be cranked in to tighten. I made a special tool to crank mine down when I ran stock steering:

Check your front U bolts too. My steering was wondering some. A friend pointed out the U bolts were loose. I had changed out my front leaf springs and never did go back and recheck them after wheeling about three months. I thought it was time for a total rebuild. Never would of thought that loose U bolts was the problem.
