Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hey guys, I'm installing the Aisin hubs and I'm stuck.

I've got the hub body on and it's RTVed. I then installed the original shim (.012") and then the original snap ring. However, there seems to be way too much play between the snapring groove and the shim.

Did I install something incorrectly? What do I need to do to fix this? (I removed the snapring to take the pic)

Too much space = add thicker shim. I assume you're using the snap ring groove in the splines that takes a 26mm snap ring, correct?

Yup, using the original snap ring, 26mm and I have a handful of new and used just in case.

The amount of play is considerable, its coming out around .075". That surely isn't anywhere near the .005" max.

For some kooky reason THIS THREAD speaks to me.

I'm unsure how to remove the rings on the bottom of the hub body. I got the big ring off, but having trouble with the smaller ring Two hands would sure be nice

Should the inner clutch on the hub body be able to slide from front to back in the hub body?

No one can answer that question? Or is that spoon feeding?

I'm wondering if that is the source of my problem with the excessive gap. If it is, I'm thinking maybe the inner hub is set in there the wrong way. The 2 washer rings are present, so is the shim.

I'm grasping for straws really and read a lot of +Aisin... threads. I don't know anything about any of this stuff, hence all the questions. I'll keep searching in the meantime.

SHOULD NOT BE VERY MUCH CLEARANCE ON THAT PART OF THE HUB BODY, IT APPEARS THAT THE HUB CENTER MAY BE WORN WHERE IT GOES THRU THE BRONZE BUSHING, AND IT CAN DEFINATELY CAUSE THE AXLE TO HAVE TOO MUCH END PLAY IF THE CENTER DRIVE SPLIVE IS WORN WHERE IT GOES THRU THE HUB ,, THESE PARTS ARE AVAILABLE SEPERATELY JERRY

Jerry, thank you. Now I feel like I'm making progress on this. I realize no one wants to offer help when they see "Aisin" or "help, hub install" because that project is above them. It is easy forget they were once new at stuff. The problem isn't always that simple.

With feeler guages the gap pictured above is .070". What should the gap be between the ID of the bronze bushing and OD of the inner hub? I'm getting about .0095-.010" in difference (the gap is actually .019", but divided by 2 for circular).

At any rate, if it needs new parts it needs new parts. I imagine that means a new bronze ring and a new inner hub? Or all the guts of the hub body? (to include new rings and shim)

What will that run me and where can I purchase? What are the part numbers for reference? Mind you, I'm in Japan. I can check the parts store for a "special order". I'd like to balance "cost effective" (I like my money) and "convenient" (mail takes a long time to cross the ocean).

I still have the opportunity to hit the junkyard and pick up hubs from that MU I was eyeballing for around $70.

Of course, the risks of that, I could end up with another set of hubs that needs refreshing. Or I could end up with a set of hubs that work. I like the idea of new parts in these. While I'm at it, I also need a spring and ball for the dial (those are missing).

Forgive my monolog, it helps me make decisions to walk my brain through scenarios

THE CLEARENCE BETWEEN THE HUB AND THE BRONZE RING SHOULD BE ABOUT 4-5 THOU. END PLAY AT THE SMAP RING ABOUT THE SAME , NOT NEAR AS CLOSE OR AS CRITICAL AS THE AUTO HUBS , IF YOU CAN GET THE HUBS FOR 70.00 I WOULD GRAB THEM , AND TAKE A CHANCE, UNLESS THE TRUCK THAT THEY ARE COMING OFF OF LOOKS LIKE IT SPENT A LOT OF TIME IN 2WD GOOD CHANCE THEY ARE OK , MAYBE THEY WOULD LET YOU CHECK THEM OUT , I CAN GET YOU THE PT NO,S BUT HERE THOSE INDIVIDUAL PARTS TO REPAIR YOUR HUBS WOULD PROB BE IN THE AREA OF 75.-80 DOLLARS PER SIDE , YOU COULD MIX AND MATCH THEM TO GET THE BEST SET , ALL OF THOSE HUBS FROM 87 ON ARE PRETTY MUCH INTERCHANGABLE . I'm sorry you feel this way and I also think you are completely wrong. You allowed less than 24 hours from your first post to determine that nobody wanted to help you. There are people who are busy (spring, preparing for Moab, jobs, family, whatever) and have other things going on. Give it some time and your questions will be answered. If you want a faster response, head to a dealer and pay their price. I bet it is a bit higher than what you paid here.

Good Luck,
Michael

Well hopefully I am wrong. I have things going on as well hence wanting to get the job done. In the "less than 24 hours" there was plenty of activity on the board. That's where that reply came from. If I'm wrong, ok.

I guess I'll go pickup those other hubs. My hesitation to get them is not price. Its more the "negotiating" with the Japanese guy. I don't know if anyone has ever been here so what I'm saying could be wierd. The JPN don't like to tell you "No". They say "Well, would you rather..." And if you put them in a tight spot, they'll agree with you just so they don't have to say no, even if they don't completely agree. I don't feel very fair or comfortable trying to make deals with them. There's a couple more hurdles in there as well.
