Just went up and looked at a 87 xtra cab sr5. 950 bucks. So i bought it. The good body is straight, starts right up, looks unmolested, frame has no rust, sunroof. The bad it blows white smoke like crazy (this is why its cheap) He thinks its either the head gasket or the block has a crack in it. We fired it up, sounds like a normal 22 re. what should i look for when i get this thing home. Hopw can i tell if its the head gasket or if there is a crack in the block. He has receipts of the engine, it was installed less than 6k ago. it looks clean. But for 950 i couldnt pass it up. ![[Linked Image]](http://a.im.craigslist.org/P3/ug/dnlhVMPXtAX1xfSvw6xLV7mapKkE.jpg)

dude, if I saw that truck for $950, my wife would be screaming at me, but it wouldn't matter. I'd buy it anyway.

My vote is the HG...Don't know how to tell for sure without pulling the head...Do a leakdown on the cooling side and a cylinder compression test, maybe...
If Mad Max had a 4runner...

these things don't crack blocks very often, my vote is for HG.

I vote HG or eroded cooling passages in the head itself. Sure the engine was installed only 6K miles ago, but where was the engine sourced from? Warranty? Could have been a throw together in a hurry engine. As long as the short block is sound, even a cracked/eroded head is a cheap fix considering the price you paid on the truck.
Washington huh?......wunder how I missed this one?? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
Keep eyes peeled for a 89'-95' extra-cab with blown motor please! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
