ok well i have been hearing different answers from a lot of different people about if regearing helps out on gas mileage. some people say it wont help at all some say it will and some say that it will help but not very much at all. can you help me out on this? i have been really thinking about doing it a lot lately especially with the way gas prices are going up. not sure if it helps at all but i have a 5spd 3.0 V6 with 35's and stock gearing. thanks all

Getting the Wheeling Fever
My gas mileage went up when I went from stock 4.10's with 33's to 4.88's with 33's. That's with the 22re, but it should be the same outcome with the 3.0.

What is your current mileage now? If you haven't factored in the larger tires, your mpg is off by 25% if you have 4.10's(G29 on door badge), or 15% off if your truck came with 4.56's(G25 on door badge).

If you do upgrade to 5.29's, you will be back at stock gear/tire ratio. There are several benefits to this, less clutch slippage=less fuel needed to get started, better performance on and off highway=better mpg, longer clutch life=more money to be spent on rising gas prices, and you will actually get your 5th gear back for highway cruising.

You will be better off in the long run by installing the right gears. Either find used 3rds, or have one built for you, figure about $800-1000 for shop work and gears if you bring the 3rds in.

Finding a used 3rd with right gear ratio will be the cheapest way to go.

When I change mine it costed me about $300, including adding in a LSD. Since I have been saving about 3L or $3 for each 100km, I figure my breakeven point is only 10000km, easily attainable in less than 6 months.

So ya, it's worth it because u get all the benefits back, thus slow down excessive drivetrain wear.

On my '85 when I ran 5.29s and 33" tires, I got much better mileage than I do now with 4.88s and 33s. Probably 3-4 MPG difference. I did add some lift and did some engine power improvements before installing the 4.88s. At least with the 22RE, I think it runs more efficiently at higher RPMs. However, I find the driveability with the 4.88s is better. Much more pleasant driving at ~3000 RPM for hours on end than at 3500 or so.

I don't have to put my foot all the way down to the floor to get my truck going anymore (used to be either off the gas or all the way on <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />), butwith my 5.29's (33"tires) it provided a very noticable difference, and that was before i did a bunch of engine mods...

would this be any different on my 22r? im contemplating a gear swap and had a line on 488s but if it would really work better id look into 529s.

I would think it may be similar, but not sure how the carbs work at various loads and RPMs. With 4.88s, your speedo and odo will be pretty close to stock (my odo is dead on, my speedo is about 6% fast). With 5.29s, your speedo and odo will read 10-15% fast unless you recalibrate things.

Roger, I am a little confused here. How can it be that the odo and speedo are not in sync w/ each other? That is, shouldn't they both be off by 6%, or both right on, etc? Aren't they driven off of the same gear?
