Average Fuel Consumption for 1990 2.6 Petrol Pajero #719661 04/29/06 02:48 PM

Hi.

I was just wondering what sort of fuel consumption I should expect from my 1990 2.6 petrol Pajero. At the moment I get about 13 mpg. Is this reasonable?

Any comments and help will be much appreciated.

Regards

Warren

In town or highway? I got 15 mpg highway, with my 2.6 and 32" mud tires. I think I got 17 mpg on the original 29" tires. If you could swap in a TBI fuel injection, It might help.

Can't tell what country you're from, but as you refer to "petrol", I'll assume British (Imperial) gallons...

My 2.6 from 1987 to 2005 averaged 19.1 MPG, with closer to 17 MPG with the larger tires and extra weight of the bumpers, etc (and more off-roading, and trailer pulling). I do correct my mpg calculaions for changes in tire size.

Thanks for the help guys... I am from South Africa and converted from KM/L to US Miles/Gallon. In KM per Litre I get 5.5km per litre on the open road. It really seems excesive to me. I will get tyre measurements etc and post later. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Hi. My tyres are 245/75 R15. Everything else is standard, other than some fuel savers: http://www.savepetrol.com/

Sorry. I also have a non-standard electronic ignition.

Hi

I have been doing some research of my own (I am not a mechanic, so I donÆt know how good this info is!) I have found on this forum, one guy had a problem like mine and found that he could see fuel running down the carb while the motor was idling... I see this as well when I look down the carb. Unfortunately there was no conclusion as to weather this was his problem or not.

I have also found that a warn camshaft could cause reduced power, sluggish performance and increased fuel consumption.

I have also found that a warn timing chain can cause:
Rough idle, Sluggish performance and poor economy, sudden engine performance change including the inability to start the engine, Intermittent backfire through the intake manifold, Inconsistent ignition timing or a clattering noise coming from the front of the engine.

My motor has done 270000km (+-168000miles).

Would any of you be able to tell me what the most common cause for my poor consumption would be?

Regards

Warren

Major couses of poor fuel economy (in my experience): Blown Bowl Vent Valve, Blown Aux Acceleration Pump diaphram, disconnected vacuum lines, timing wrong. I've had all these, and the bowl vent valve was the worst (10mpg) and very hard starting. I think you can find any of these by doing a search on here. I currently get 22mpg with an auto transmission and stock tires in daily driving. Terry
