Getting the Wheeling Fever
I got an 86 CJ7 with a Motorcraft 2100 carb and 258. I tuned up the carb and got it idling smooth around 700 rpm but now the engine stalls when cold. Sometimes I get a dark cloud of smoke when I start the engine when its hot or cold. I dont believe the choke is working properly. Ive tried to adjust it but I think it just sucks. Does anyone have any advice about replacing this? My cuz told me to put a manual cable on it, but wanted to check with you guys first. If there is another way Id like to know.
Take it easy.

check all of the connections/linkages. on my dad's 84 this same thing was happening and we found that it was due to one of the arms kept coming off of the butterfly. therefore the choke wasnt operating correctly and the thing would constantly die when cold.

once we figured that out, then it was getting horrible mileage and ran like poop when warmed up, only to find the linkage that held the choke open when warm was also off.

fixed both of these issues and now she runs like a champ.

Thord do you have one with a lectric choke? Or does it have the exhaust heater? Or perhaps both? With the electric choke it is infinitely adjustable. I have had several than required a STOP installed to keep the travel to a minimum.

Its a thermal choke but it appears to have an electric fitting on it.... although nothings plugged it. It is adjustable by loosening couple screws and rotating it, but it still doesnt seem to help, could it be dead? How exactly do should I adjust it?

MANUAL CHOKE!!! easy to install and you can clean house at the same time. I installed the 2100 w/ #48 jets last fall. runs like a beast now that carter crap is gone. in the process i got down to three vaccum lines. EGR, advance timing, and canister purge. all that mess of vaccum lines and electronic junk under there is gone. it's beautiful.

Well thord I guess the best thing for YOU to do is to install a manual choke... There is a lil trick involved to get the electric choke working as it should on a 2100 swap.
What I do is to take out all the guts from the exhaust part of the choke system, seal the opening, and then install a NEW HOLLEY heat spring.. then I limit the travel of the spring.. I can get em working like factory after the swap.
THORD did you do the nutter bypass? If not you are not getting enough advance in your dist after the 2100 swap.

I did not do the conversion, but i know the vacuum advance is working well when i had the timing light on it. what should be plugged into the electric fitting on the choke?
