I have a 1998 Amigo with a blown motor and would like to put a diesel in it. I can get a 4JB1TB or there are also some 2.2l diesels (presumably from diesel troopers?) available. How much of a pain is it to do this. I'm guessing that the bell housing will not mate. I know that a lot of other things will have to be changed, but I do not want to find another tranny and transfer case. Is this possible?

I don't recomend the C223 (2.2L) you will be disapointed in the power (good engine tho), the 4JB1-T is just a much better sized engine.

Thanks, I was thinking that, and the 4JB1 is much cheaper, but I wonder if it is actually the same engine. I expect the one I'm looking at came from a skid loader or something, and I don't know if the emissions are kosher or, really, anything else about the engine. I'm not that concerned anymore with the power though, I'm looking for mileage more than anything. Also, it would be nice if Isuzu's engines would consume SVO as happiliy as an MB, but that's another discussion, for another day.

A C223 working hard may well use more fuel than a 4JB1-T working light. My friend with a C223 didn't do as good as my heavy foot and a 4JB1-T. 32 MPG is common with a 4JB1-T in a 2,000 Kg Mu/Amigo.

That occurred to me just after I posted it. What does the 2.8 weigh? Would I have to rebuild the front end? Do you know if there is a way to bolt it to my existing drive train? Thanks for the info already supplied and the info forthcoming. BTW, do you know what the difference is between the 'T' and the 'TB-a' if any?

I wouldn't recommend using an industrial engine. If I recall correctly, the bellhousings are different between the passenger vehicle and industrial engines (not sure what you'd do for a transmission/clutch), as are numerous other details, including the injection pump, manifolds, etc. It may even be the case that the ind. version is indirect injection and makes less power than the pass. veh. version. This is all just my recollection, but I do know there are differences. You will need a different transmission either way - buying an import engine/trans combo is likely the easiest swap path.
Again, if I recall, the 4JB1-TC I bought weighed about 550 lbs.
