In the absence of directions...
Trying to wire up 2 100w off road lamps that Matt sells. I'm trying to get the relay working, but confused. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" />

I think this is the way it works, but I have a question: what about the pole in the center? From looking at other relays, it would seem that the two parallel poles in the center would have power running to them when the dash switch is thrown. Instead, it's one or the other when the dash switch is thrown.

Second set of questions: if I have to have both lights running off that bottom pole, is a 30A fuse on the top side (close to the battery) pretty much the right for this job?

Thanks...

Try this link.

Should explain things pretty well. As far as the fuse, Amps = Watts / Volts, so if you have 200 W of lighting in the circuit divided by 12 V you come up with 16.66 Amps, so the 30 A fuse should be fine.

Good luck,

Jay

Does that relay have the numbers printed by the pins like the aftermarket Bosch ones do (or at least a lay-out sheet with the pins labelled)? If so, wire a 12v constant (fused for safety of course) to pin 30, next wire the lights' positive wire to pin 87, ground pin 85 on the relay, and ground the lights' negative wire, next wire pin 86 on the relay to the on/off switch you are using for the lights.

Nah, I just remembered a similar discussion a while back and searched until I found the link again...

Besides, at least wiring is something I know a little bit about...*I* feel so outclassed by most of the stuff folks are doing here, it's nice to find a topic where I might be able to contribute something...

Yep - ask a detailed question and ye shall receive. My relay does have those markings...That link with these pictures said it all.

Relay at rest:

Relay energized:

That now explains why I was getting power to one light, then the other, when I had the lights hooked up to 87 and 87a.

So, now I just have to splice the two lights wires together to one connector and finish the dash switch wiring.

Thanks, guys!!!

Exactly Mike, these guys hooked you up pretty well. 87a is N/C (Normally Closed) while 87 is N/O (Normally Open). 87 is wher eyou want to be with the lights, when you energize the relay it will latch open thus, turning the lights on, while turning off whatever is connected to 87.

So, it is very possible to have two devices hooked up to this same relay, although not standard practice. Ive utilized that scenario a lot for alarms, etc...

I used sort of a reversed setup on my fuel pump when I had to switch to an electric from a mechanical. One device hooked up to two different sources of power. The fuel pump positive wire is on 30, 87a is hooked up to the starter circuit (power to pump only when key is to start) and 87 is hooked to a keyed on cicuit (power only when key is ON). The coil (85 and 86) is hooked to a feed off the engine relay that has power only when the motor is spinning. It took me a while to work it all out, but now the pump only runs if the key is turned to start or the motor is running. No runaway gas leaks in an accident or if the motor dies when I leave it idling.
