81 chevy luv transmission help #720666 05/03/06 05:36 AM

Need some advice with a transmission problem.
I have an 81 Chevy LUV 2wd diesel pickup with a 5 speed manual transmission. The transmission started making a slight knocking noise several months ago in 2nd and 5th gears. The noise progrssively worsened so I stopped driving it. This truck averages about 36 mpg and I would like to fix it.
Any recommendations where to get parts?
Are there any special tricks to removing the transmission?
I plan on tearing down and rebuiding it myself, so any advice would be very appreciated.

Thanks

Need a Spot
I have the 5-speed myself. This is the weak link in the P'up (and LUV). This sounds like a bearing failure. There's some great advice in this thread on the IsuzuPup.com forum...

HEY JACK A REAL EASY TRANS UPGRADE ON THESE DSL PUPS IS TO LOCATE A 2.3 GAS TRANS 88-95 AND JUST SWAP THE FRONT TRANS CASE FROM THE DSL, AND IT BOLTS RIGHT IN THEN YOU WILL NEED THE LARGER OUTPUT SLIP YOKE FROM AN AUTOMATIC TRNS 2.3 PICKUP AND IT WILL FIT THE TRANS AND THE SMALL U JOINT DRIVE SHAFT, THE LATER TRANS IS MUCH STRONGER THAN THE THE EARLY MSG AN DPARTS ARE STILL AVAILABLE FOR THEMM SOME OF THE EARLIER GEARS AND SHAFTS ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE ... Thanks for the help. I got the transmission out and partially disassembled. The front drive bearing is obviously wasted. Everything else looks good so far.

IF THE BEARING HAS CAME APART OR FEELS REAL GRITTY YOU REALLY SHOULD DISSASEMBLY THE ENTIRE TRANS MAIN SHAFT AND CLEAN AND CHECK ALL THE BEARINGS TO MAKE CERTAIN THERE IS NO JUNK LEFT , OR YOU WILL DESTORY YOUR NEW BEARINGS JERRY
