I just ruined an FJ40 tie rod end. How come? #721991 05/09/06 02:54 AM

***EDIT - It was an FJ80 TRE ***

According to Marlin's site, torque specs are 80-100lbs. I had my wrench set to 85, and it just kept turning. Finally stripped the nut.

I had anti-sieze on the threads, which I'm now thinking was a mistake. The nut turned down far enough that the cotter pin holes were completely above the castle nut.

I never thought I'd ask something so simple, but can someone tell me the *right* way to do this? I clearly haven't figured it out.

Mark

Don't know about the FJ tie rod, but 80 foot pounds of torque sounds like a bit too much my 85 FSM says it should be 67 foot pounds. The knuckle arm at the steering knuckle gets 80 foot pounds. As for the threadlock adding to the trouble I think you are on to something. I once found out as you have that using the threadlock when wet provides a bit of lubrication on the threads and makes it easier to turn. This really throws off the torque wrench reading. With castle nuts and cotter pins you shound not need the threadlock to keep it from loosening.

Yes, to reiterate XJ's reply, torque IS affected by lube, regardless of the application. Usually if you need loctite or some other product, the service manual will tell you so.

Just to be clear, it wasn't locktite I was using, it was Permatex anti-seize. I put it on the TRE mating surface to make them easier to remove, then decided to put it on the threads, too. Bad idea.

Did any of the other nuts do it? As you were answered over on PBB, I believe the nut was not as good as required. Either the heat-treating was wrong or the thread specs were not right. I do not think the anti-seize had anything to do with it.

I'm on shakey ground here, because I am about to disagree with David... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" /> (he is usually very right)

Wet torque is NOT the same as dry torque. Ask me how I found that out... same way ScaldedDog did +/-.

As already mentioned, the spec I got from A/P regarding my FJ80 tie rod is about 67 ft/lbs and I worry about stripping them out at that torque. 80-100ft/lbs sounds insane to me.

Do mine around 70 IIRC- confirming Brian. Always dry.

No problem, I am glad when people point out when I am wrong about something, makes me learn something new. Therefore, I did a bit of research on Google by inquiring "Torque Specs" and this is what I came up with. These are all dry specs:

Metric Steel Bolts Torque Specifications

Standard Dry Torque in Foot-Pounds

Bolt Size Millimeters-----------------------------14mm

Coarse Thread Pitch-----------------------------1.25

Standard 5D 71,160 psi Med. Carbon Steel--------55 ft lbs

Standard 8G 113,800 psi Med. Carbon Steel-------89 ft lbs

Standard 10K 142,000 psi Med. Carbon Steel------117 ft lbs

Standard 12K 170,674 psi Med. Carbon Steel------137 ft lbs

Now the question is, what are they made from?
