Getting the Wheeling Fever
I am not sure if this is normal. My 87 22re 4runner idles at about 6500rpms when its warmed up. Sometimes it will get a little shudder here and there. Do these trucks just do this or is there something I should be checking? Also, if I shut off the truck and then start it soon after (with a couple hours) the idle will be really bad until it warms up (sometimes as low as 5000rpms. I do have a drilled thermostat to solve my overheating issue. Could this be contributing to this problem? I have a new TPS, new O2 sensor, new plugs, recent timing setting (done with new TPS) any ideas anyone?

650 and 500 RPM I assume <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />

I run my idle around 800 or so, just turn up the idle air screw on the throttle body with the engine warm.

I hope it's 500 and 650 RPM at idle.....an idle of 6500 RPM is really gonna limit those highway speeds.

My old 3.0L used to idle around 900 or 950....obvioualy high. After playing with it for a while I figured out the shaft on the throttle butterfly valve was worn out and that was causing the throttle to not close fully.

It's easy to test actually. Get the truck running and just reach in there and push the throttle closed (push where the throttle cable connects to the lever arm) with a little finger pressure. If the idle drops and stays there after you remove your finger, it's probable a worn butterfly shaft.

I was all torqued up to replace the throttle body....but then I realized, aside from the high idle, it really wasn't effecting anything.....and not worth the $350 the junk yard wanted for a used one.

'93 4Runner - 3.4L 5VZ-FE, 2" body lift, on-board-air system, custom gauge cluster, rear e-locker, electric fan, custom built front and rear bumpers, sliders, 4,88 gears...all on 33x12.5's.

yeah I did mean 500 and 650 smile very stupid of me smile thanks for the help I am going to take it back and have them check the timing and TPS just to be sure but i'll adjust that idle screw!

Another possibility is your tb is gunked up on the manifold side and you just haven't seen it. Lots of tarry buildup in there can stop your butterfly valve from closing properly too, or more particularly blocking the little bypass passage which is your mian contibutor to air intake at idle since the butterfly is usually set almost or totally closed. It blocked = less air = slow idle. Adjusting your idle screw up is letting more air in but eventually you'll run out of adjustment. I took my tb and manifold off a few years ago because I was having idle problems but adjusting the idle screw was only fixing temprorarily. Problems would still come back. Finally took it off and it was very dirty. After a good cleaning I reset my idle and everything was a ok. The clean manifold and tb made a huge difference to performance and smooth running too. Mileage up a bit, and more power too.

Just a thought in case the problem reterns later after you adjust the idle screw.
