I picked up an axle the other day from a friend who needed it gone. He said it was a D44 (full width) but I didn't look at it too closely till yesterday. It appears to be a 10-bolt based on the shape of the diff cover. From what I gather, the strength of a 10-bolt is very comparable to a D44, and that the knuckles are interchangeable.

Other than not being able to use my D44 ARB, is there any reason why this shouldn't be as good as a D44 for my future SAS?

I'm still trying to decide if I keep it, or try to give it back. The price was right, but I don't need another lawn ornament.

Thanks,

well strength is pretty identical, so is aftermarket support... the biggest con against it is that it will be full width (~67")... but if you're already planning a full width SAS, then I don't see much problem in going with a 10b over D44

I may be able to find "someone" that may want to buy that D44 ARB. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/evil.gif" alt="" />

It is 67" wide, and I'm thinking of going full width. It also sounds like parts would be easier and cheaper to find for the 10-bolt. A lot of people seem to be practically giving them away.

This one has new calipers, rotors on both sides, and bearings on one side.

Sooner or later, you could be driving around with half my truck in yours <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

Still not sure what I'm going to do <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

Yeah cause I'd snag those indy4x brake lines as well, when you swap.

I was thinking D60 or 14-bolt. I know there are some 6 lug 14b SF around. This 10-bolt is 6 lug, so I should be able to find something out of the rear of a similar vehicle, right?

I'd probably be getting new rims, so I don't really care either way, they just need to match.

Obviously, I didn't reasearch this one too well. I just said OK, and loaded up the truck.

I feel like I just need to bring a sharpie and masking tape to the next Uwharrie, and let everyone stake claim to my parts <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

Not that you'd have anything left when I got done. Well the axles...

well, the reason I ask is you'll basically have to ditch the outers and get new hubs/spindles to equip the 10-bolt for 8-lug. there are plenty of articles about doing this on the chevy forums. D44's on the other hand can be had with 8-lug OEM.

-Rob

btw, don't waste your time with a SF 14b.. ain't worth it. you basically loose all the cool features of the 14bff and you're stuck with the same heavy boat anchor.

Thanks Rob <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

I talked to the guy today, and the fact that it isn't a D44 was news to him. He'll take it back, no problem. It sounds like it might be more trouble than it's worth. I'll just keep my eye out for a set of 8-lug chevy 3/4 ton axles.

I think I'll keep the ARB for now Joe <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/nana.gif" alt="" />
