Anyting I should do while I have the trans removed? #723640 05/15/06 09:14 PM

With a good bit of help from Tad (Nazrat), I got most of the work done removing the transmission. The only thing left is 6 bellhousing bolts. I'll be replacing it with a freshly rebuilt 700R4 :knocks on wood:. Is there anything I should take care of on the engine while I have the trans pulled?

The engine is a SOHC with about 150k, and there seems to be a lot of oil on the trans housing, and the back of the engine. I'm going to clean everything up and see if I can locate a source, but I haven't had any real oil usage problems in the past.

I only want to do this once

Thanks,

If you have found oil back there, check the rear main seal. If it is leaking, change it out!

The rear main seal was on my list of things to check I haven't messed with one of those yet, so I'll have to pull the manual and get a procedure.

Thanks,

Keep it coming

ANDRE CHECK THE BACK SIDE OF THE CYL HEADS AND MAKE CERTAIN THAT THE CAM BORE PLUGS ARE NOT LEAKING AND THAT THE RETAINER PLATES ARE ON THE HEADS , IF YOU ARE GOING TO USE THE SOHC ENG THOSE PLATES ARE A MUST TO KEEP THE PLUGS FROM BLOWING OUT , THEY WERE ALL SUPPOSSED TO BE REPLACED ON ALL EARLY VEH BY A REALL MANY YEARS AGO BUT THERE WERE A FEW THAT SLIPPED THRU , IF THEY ARE NOT THERE LET ME KNOW I HAVE THE DIAGRAMS TO MAKE NEW ONES , I COULD TELL YOU WHO DESIGNED THE ORIGINAL ONES FOR THE SOHC BUT I WON,T ... LET ME KNOW JERRY

I'll take a good look at things when I get the trans out. I'll take a picture to make sure.

Thanks Jerry

Based on the amount of oil that I've seen toward the rear of my SOHC 3.2 lately, I'm guessing that mine probably didn't get those plates either.

So, Andre, ya wanna maybe make a few spares while you're at it?

Whil;e the tranny is out , if its been used , you might want to replace the seal rings on the shafts , and the filter.Saves a little work down the road And definately change the rear seal while its there in front of you.

If I end up having to make some retainer plates, I'll take good notes, and maybe make a few sets, depending on the complexity

Jerry If you can send me a copy of the diagrams,I'd appreciate it.I'd like to look at them.
Thanks

Oh and Andre, might be easier to replace all your heater hoses with new ones w/o the tranny in there.
