I'm changing the brakes on my 1979 truck, and I've gotten the old pads off. But, now I can't fit the new pads in and I can't figure out how to compress the pistons any further. Any tips on how to compress the pistons and get the new pads in?

Make sure your brake reservoir is topped off; open up the bleed screws just a little bit, and compress them with a C-clamp. I use a thin piece of plywood scrap under the c-clamp.

A pair of offset clamping vise-grips work well too. If your pads were really worn, your pistons in the calipers could be seized in the bores.

I can't locate the bleed screws- the picture in the manual doesn't seem to correspond with my brakes. How can I tell what is what?

Hmmm.... I know on the later trucks, there's a little hex about 8 or 10mm standoff with a dustcap on the backside of the caliper. If yours doesn't have this, look for a small hex plug.

If you still can't find anything, crack the fitting open very slightly. The fluid behind that piston needs to be able to go somewhere.
