Looking in my Haynes, it says my 85 CJ7 most likely has an AMC/Jeep semi-floating tapered axleshaft axle assembly.

Any advice to be sure?

Body Damage is Cool
If the diff cover is round, like a perfect circle, It's an AMC 20. If there are nuts on the end of the axles, at each wheel, (under a little hub cap usually), it's an AMC 20. That's what came stock in 85 though it's not unusual for people to replace the stock axle/hub assemblies with one piece axles like most semi floating axles have, in which case there will be no nuts on the axle ends). The Key thing is the round cover.
