![[Linked Image]](http://www.rockfrogs.org/Pictures/AE/broken-2.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](http://www.rockfrogs.org/Pictures/AE/broken-1.jpg) ????????? This is my parts truck for my 84 4Runner rockcrawler project ( http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=14334.0) I knew the engine wasn't running when I bought it but the guy never could tell me why. My dad or I have never seen an engine break in that spot. What would cause that bolt to break? I'm glad I bought a new cam and adjustable cam gear now. Oh yea, the rocker assembly needs a good cleaning

Holy crud, I guess someone didn't believe in changing the oil....ever.
My first guess is maybe the distributor locked up. I know my Honda distributor bearing went out on me and siezed the crap out of the distributor shaft.

wow, I always wondered what people did with their old gear oil. I would vote that the cam locked up or the junk bound up the valve springs..

Yea, I know it's pretty nasty. I have a rebuilt shortblock and rebuilt head for my engine buildup. I just needed the EFI stuff off of this motor. The other strange thing was I drained over 7 quarts of nasty, thick oil. Could too much nasty oil cause this?

I think the cam siezed and tore off the aligning lug on the cam and the top timing chain sprocket broke the bolt. That reduction gear for the distributor would have stripped before breaking that bolt.
Another thing, maybe someone was using that bolt to turn over a motor for timing purposes....or? and it broke.

I'll have to check the head to see if the cam is siezed. That's probably the best answer I've heard. Thanks.

i'd think the timing chain would snap before that bolt ever would. it's a 12mm main cap bolt.

I dunno, chain steel is a very different material than, well I really don't know anything about cam steel, so never mind.
Did you bath that motor in a swamp before taking the picture? No, What did they use for oil, crude oil?!

That's why you don't use an impact gun to run nuts and bolts down.
