My windshield wipers seem to take too long of a sweep. Both of them slap the bottom hard and tend to even wipe down over the window gasket, and then do the same thing on the upsweep too. Just adjusting the the postion of the wiper arms on the shaft would not help so I'm wondering if the motor has some adjustment for the sweep length. I have not pulled the wiper motor out, but the book does not show anything like an adjustment on it. I did have the arms apart recently to grease the bushings on the wiper shafts and most everything seemed tight.
I do have another 86 I could pull parts from but I don't remember if it had simlar issues or not. I'm just wondering if this is a wear problem or there is some adjustment to be made.

My guess is that you have excessive wear in the linkage for the wipers.

My 88 Trooper does the same thing. I was going to remove the wiper arm off of the motor shaft and move it back one spline. Worth a try I guess.

I had kind of the same problem except it seemed to only have one speed & when I turned them off, they stopped immediately instead of coming to rest down at the bottom of the windshield. I pulled the wiper motor & removed the top case. Underneath you will see a set of 3 brushes. Look for a broken wire or connection. I had a bad connection & just soldered it back to where it belongs. Wipers work fine in low, high & intermentent speeds & they now park as they were designed to do. Hope that helps. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" />

Sounds like I just need to pull it all apart and see which piece is sloppy. It is probably the joint right at the wiper motor, since both wipers do it. I can sort of fix the passenger side by moving it a spline, but the driver side slaps the bottom of the window and the top so any change makes things worse. I guess this is just one of those things you have to deal with in Oregon, since we use our wipers so much they just wear out.
