Body Damage is Cool
Way cool. I did something like this because whoever broke into my 4Runner a year ago, busted and shredded all the rear interior panels (plastic, 1985) to get out the $10 6x9 speakers! Bastards! I woulda given them the crappy speakers if i'da known. Now it's carpeted plywood panels with the speaker holes hidden behind the carpet. So now they cant be seen.

Do you think teh carpet muffles the high end very much? Physics says yes, but often the ear says otherwise and just can't tell.

i'm getting ready to move my 6x9s from the rear back sides(also using plywood instead of the plastic panels) to the same back carpeted passenger panels.
However I was considering boxing them into that open box/tray to avoid having to cut sheet metal. Thoughts?

In my case, no. The carpet I used is a marine (boat) weatherproof carpet. Not too tightly woven. Sounds just fine, and what the thieves cant see........
