Blinking Check Engine Light!!!! #727552 05/28/06 03:55 PM

What does this likeliy mean? While driving this morning on the highway and with no warning the check engine light came on and was blinking. Everything I have found indicates the potential for a critical failure of the engine. Is this accurate? I immediately pulled over and didn't find anything out of the ordinary, shifted into N and P, then back into D (I was only about 400 yrds. from exit) and the light went off. I left the truck there and not sure where to go from here. I read somewhere that this indicates a coming failure of the catalytic converter??? Any help would be appreciated.

At that mileage it sounds like it could be an 02 sensor. They seem to like to go between 100 and 150k miles.

Get an OBDII code reader (autozone will loan you one) and read out the stored codes..

Some types of errors will turn the light on, and then back off when the intermittent condition goes away.. other codes will keep the light on solid..

Need to know the specific code...

Flashing chech engine light means you have a potentially catalyst damaging misfire.

DO NOT DRIVE THE TRUCK LIKE THIS!!!

I'm not saying you should be afraid to drive the truck to the shop to get it fixed, but trust me, you don't want to screw around when that light is flashing. Cat converters are very expensive.

It's not an O2 sesnor or something like a gas cap left off. This is a serious misfire being picked up my the computer.

Things to check in your own driveway: spark plug wires and boots, spart plugs, dead cat caught up in the belt, that sort of thing. If you have a distributor, there may be water in it or for DIS, perhaps a grounded plug wire pringing down two cylinders.
