You have to remove the intake manifold. The thermostat housing is under the aluminum manifold.

Joe

The thermostat is in the area under the manifold but one can remove the thermostat without touching the manifold.

I can say that on the 98 and up there is no way possible to change the thermostat without removing the intake manifold.

It is however possible to do on the SOHC engines.

I am going for a tuarus fan install to try and resolve the issue. Id like to pull the fan off so that I have more room. I havent even got to that. I am going to build the shroud after I get back from vaction in a week. I have ordered the aluminum alreadya dn have the fan so I am half way there.

I think it will take care of my problem.

BTW this has not happened again but I am concerned that it will this summer, on the beach or on a long hill climb that it will be.

trust me on this, spend the time and just drop the radiator.
This weekend was the test, and from thursday to sunday the temp gage never went above normal and this included rough slow climbs a mile and such up mountains etc.
I never would of rushed the B/L install if I would of know what a difference the radiator drop would make.

Now if the taurus fan/shroud etc. fits the radiator then go for that but the radiator drop is basically a free mod, just lot's of work.

I'll agree with Bansil on that one. I had a Nissan that I did a BL on and luckily, the lift came with the radator drop bracket. I never had any problems with overheating.

The bracket itself was pretty simple, but cutting the old one off was a pain, so a lot of people didn't do it and just removed the fan shroud - they overheated a lot.

If your fan isn't in a shroud, then it isn't pulling air across the radiator. It takes the "easiest route" which is AROUND the radiator.

It can be done, just need 1/4" universal socket, 3/8" universal socket, long 1/4" and 3/8" extensions and lots of patience. Not just universal joint extensions but universal joint sockets. Did it on my 2000 Amigo without pulling the intake. Have to be able to work with mirrors and in the blind by touch for the most part.

I'd love to know how you got to the frontmost divers side bolt that's directly under the heater hose hard line. I had to remove it to get the that particular fastener even with the intake off.

And how in the hell did you get the bolts started back?? You must have a six pack of double jointed midgets working for you.

Ok I decided to snap a pic last night to show what I was trying to describe. Here is what I was talking about with the front most drivers side bolt being next to impossible to get to even with the intake off.

[Linked Image]

If you did that job with the intake on kudos, you are a better man than I. I'd suggest to most that the intake should come off if nothing else to replace the o-ring seals in the heater hoses. Mine came off in pieces, I assume where they have put up with extreme temps for 100,000 miles.
