Pretty much ive had 3 clutch fans and the truck just cant seem to stay cool. After some testing of the fans ive come to find out the there just not engaging. When I start the truck, that is the only time I hear it make that rushing sound of air then it gradually dies down. But the sound never returns even after being in 4x4 Low and bombin through the trails. It still climbs in temperature.
So browsing some sites, I found a nice 16" High CFM fan for roughly $110. Was wondering what people thought of them (Good name, it is a flex-a-lite version) or if any one has some recommendations for electric fans. S-Blade 16" High-Performance electric fan
Also, what would be an ideal temperature for the fan to click on to begin cooling it down?

Hard to believe you can't stay cool in New York.
My clutch fan keeps me very cool here in California and I wheel in the Sierras as well as the Death Valley area. Something is wrong with your truck if it is not keeping cool. Check for air blockage going into the radiator, and for proper ignition timing (too far advanced can cause overheating while under load).
Most guys I've known that installed an electric fan, threw them away after a year or so, when they failed. Nothing like OEM to get you home.

You are replacing the clutch part ... right???

electric fans are only for when you don't have enough room for a mech fan

Well, I suppose that's debatable. I like electric fans, but I'm typically too lazy to wire one. I'm putting a black magic on my 88 because I have it. I'm also putting on on my 96... again, because I have it.

But I think there is a problem if the mechanical fan isn't cooling enough; clutch, plugged radiator, collapsing hose, etc.

I've run both electirc and clutch fans, I find the clutch works fine. I have had bad luck with non-Toyota/Aisin brand clutches. I think my original clutch (Aisin) lasted well over 200K miles then became too stiff and was killing my gas mileage (it is now my spare). I picked up a new Aisin clutch from Toyota and it has worked fine since then, can crawl in lo-lo range all way long in the desert and the temperature neve rises.

ThisBlack Magic is a better one to get, it draws less amps and flows more cfm's. It also mounts better than the one you were looking it, granted it costs more.

The problem most have w/e-fans is getting a cheap one that doesn't flow enough cfm's, or they have prob's w/the thermostat. Both of those prob's is fixed with the Black Magic fan. The Black magic has an internal thermostat, that can be set to come on at a certain temp using a heat gun. You can also avoid the thermostat problem completely by setting up the fan to come on w/the ignition and have it run continuously.

More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else.

Well, these past few days its been anywhere from 99-107 and super Muggy out. I definitley know theres nothing wrong with the truck since its just had a new head/water pump/timing chain and gears and all new fluid w/ fully burped system and OEM thermostat in it. And for the longest time since all that work was done, it has been working fine. The truck cant seem to keep cool when Not in motion. And I just now put on another clutch fan. I started the truck, drove it around town and had No problem at all w/ over heating. I parked it in my driveway and let it idle for 10 minutes. It was 3/4 hot...started to drive again and I could hear the clutch fan engaging (with that loud rush sound it makes) and it Did drop to normal temps quite fast...just not sure Why it cant stay cool when Not in motion
Where are these trucks suppose to be at timing wise? I can check that and see if it is off or something..
And Kyron - yes I am replacing the whole fan actually. So far these have just been junkyard ones lol..maybe im just thinning out the herd and getting crappy ones everytime I go.
Ill try the Stealership and see if a brand spankin new one solves the problem. If not, goodbye mechanical and hello electric lol

I second the vote on the black magic fan. Mine is going through its second summer in the desert and I haven't had a single cooling issue since installed. Install was easy as well.

I'm on my 5th or 6th year with my Black Magic fan. The 'built in" adjustable thermostat died about 2 years ago so I bought a Hayden electronic adjustable one and it's been running great ever since. I also bought a replacement motor for mine so I would have it on hand when the original died.

Also, I wired in an LED on the dash so I know when it's on....easy to do......
