Getting the Wheeling Fever
Well I just thought if you guys wanted to know what I have been doing to my "project" here you go. If you don't then I'll stop typing . to start, I bought a 89 4runner for 1700(mistake #1) (I put the racks on from my 1st runner, should have never sold it! )

[Linked Image]
the Bad:#1 some rust. all over the rear wheels, very little on the inside of the door up on the windshild area
#2 The tranny pops out of 1st and 3rd, clutch makes noise, and leaks fluid.
#3 the # 2 spark plug hole on the head was stripped out completly
#4 Tires are old and rotted
#5 the interior is not that great.

I'll bite; 22RE or 3.sl0w?
Try the shifter bushing fix for the tranny first.
Check the sticky in the Runner section for jury-riggin' it for antitheft. You west coast guys are thief magnets unfortunately.

Might make a list this weekend and go shoppin' in the F/S section.

Here's my write up on the shift seat replacement. That's a good bet as the cause for the shifter popping out of gear. Easy fix if that's the cause.

Well there are good things too, but they come at a cost
#1 It is a 4runner
#2 22re which I can work on and I love doing project myself.
#3 There is no rush when building this, because it is my 2nd rig. That takes a lot of the pressure off when you have the motor stripped down. It makes it a project worth it.
#4 It does seem to be a soild truck , not a lemon or engine that will go out some time.

So far I have put alot (to me)of money in it. First I bought all the stuff for a tune up and that is when I realized that the #2 spark plug was stripped. so next I bought a head from eb. The street rv with a 268 cam. the water ways in the engine needed to be cleaned bad. a lot of corosion. So I bought new water pump, oil pump, timing cover, timing kit (steel backed).
First I had to drill the head just slightl to get the dowl to fit in(I was scared to do that!! ) Then everything fit on nicely.

Body Damage is Cool
$1,700? Thats a deal. Might try removing the rubber accordian from around your stick shift to see if it's pushing the stick out of gear.
