I have an 88 4Runner with auto hubs. I'm thinking about swaping them for the manual locking hubs. What would be the benefit and drawbacks. Thank you.

I 2nd Staceman
Switched mine over to manual hubs, i'd rather have to get out and lock them and know they're going to work than sit in the cab and wonder <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />.

I don't trust anything with the word "automatic" in it's name. I'm sure automatic hubs were designed for lazy slobs. Even though I'm new to the 4WD world, I still remember my much older and somewhat smarter brother switching from auto to manual on his Chevy, when I was still a young'n. You know what he said? "I'd rather switch'em myself, than sit in the truck and wonder". I don't trust anything...

auto hubs are awful... they unlock when you shift into reverse (whether you like it or not) you have to be completely stopped to shift into 4wd. they are weak and unreliable.
it is easy to swap- get aisins (what came stock on toyotas) they are more reliable than 99% of aftermarket brands
drawbacks- you have to get out and lock them... big deal.
some people will confuse automatic hubs with ADD- be prepared for that- THEY ARE NOT THE SAME!!

Just to clarify, when auto hubs work like they're supposed to and they're unlocked the CVs aren't turning so those two points are moot.

The auto hubs on my 88 would decide to lock if it was really cold. So I swapped for manual hubs and I know for sure they are unlocked. It's definitely worth the effort and you could even see a slight increase in gas mileage with less frictional parts to worry about sticking.
