Whenever the A/C is on my engine's fax clutch engages and the fan really makes a lot of noise and really limits the power of the engine because of all the drag. It stays engaged through all gears and all RPM ranges (even past 4k RPM's).
I assume that this is not normal and I either need to replace the fan clutch or replace the fan with 2 electric fans with thermostats? Any advice or information?

I had a similar problem. My fan sounded like an airplane trying to take off. I changed the clutch out, and it ran like it was supposed to. While swaping them, I compared them both while cool. You couldn't tell hardly any difference. I guess the heat coil in the new one didn't lock up as quick. It was worth every penny.
P.S. Get a quality, long handle end wrench for this job. Size 13mm if I remember right. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

I don't know about that. The fan clutch system is based on a silicone fluid with viscosity characteristics that engage and disengage fan. It is based on speed and temp. The A/C never talks to the fan. Over a certain RPM the fan should freewheel.

So how hard is the replacement? How much other stuff needs to be removed to do it right? Any other special or unique tools needed? Thanks

nothing special, long wrench just saves you from the busted knuckles, 10-15 minutes with the right tools should do it. too bad i dont have my spare...could have given it to someone in need, its in storage 900 miles away.

It's real simple, the nuts are in tight quarters though. Rember that the new clutch is supposed to set at a certain position, for a specified ammount of time, before being put on the truck. Instruction are included. I think it is 12 hours. I'm not certain though.
