How big of a cam will the EB RV Head and spring package handle?

Will the springs keep up with a Comp Cam 222 dur @.050" .440" lift that is supposed to make power upto 4800 RPM?

Some added history for you.

I have an 89 with a 22RE that has an EB RV head with larger valves and EB 268 cam.

The intake is stock, (which I have been told flow pretty good) and a K&N filter.

The exhaust manifold is also stock but has 2 1/4" exhaust w/free flowing cat and muffler. From what I've read the stock exhaust manifold is good enough for mild applications and adding a header will make only a minor improvement.

As seen in another posting, using the 268 cam, my power drops around 4000 RPM. I like the cam, but unfortunatly I have some fair sized hills around here and the engine does not make enough torque to hold 55 mph in 4th and barely keeps up with traffic if I hit the hill @ 4000 rpm in 3rd.

I need to move the power band up a 1000 RPM.

I have a Comp Cam 222 dur @.050" .440" lift cam that didn't work very well (lots of valve train noise) with the rebuilt head (not the RV head) that came on my rebuilt engine. When I blew a head gasket I found that all of the exhaust valves were bent and while the shop was replacing them (still under warranty), I ordered the EB RV head and cam.

I don't know what springs they used on the original head, but I'm starting to think the springs may be weak and may have been the cause of some if not all of the valve train noise.

Along with this, the engine has always had a miss, which was no supprise after finding the bent exhaust valves. Even with the new head and cam, I still have this miss, and even though I was very carefull, I wonder if I may have bent the valves while installing it.

I'm going to pull the head to verify the condition of the valves and at the same time, change the cam.

Thanks in advance for any comments on the cam size, springs or history of this engine that has 8000 miles on it.

What size tires and what gear ratio?

"barely keeps up with traffic if I hit the hill @ 4000 rpm in 3rd."

4K rpm and 3rd gear????? You might want to consider changing the gear ratio or go to smaller tires.

"How about EB's 270 cam?"

I have checked his web site and looked for it on Ebay, but didn't find it.

As far as tires go, I have 31/10.50/15" and 4:10 gears. Most people seem to get around fairly good with this combo. I am planing on a gear change to 4:56 or 4:88 when I install the E-Locker, but I am holding off until I get the engine running the way I want.

The hills that I need to go up in 3rd gear @ 4000 RPM have an extra lane because they will usually slow Dump Trucks and Semi-Trucks down to the 20-35 MPH range. The speed limit is 55 MPH.
