I'm new to 22RE engines & in the middle of swapping a rebuilt 22 RE with a 22R in an 84 PU. I was cleaning up the timing cover from the donor truck & couldn't help but notice wear in the oil pump area. Is that normal for this engine or should I be looking for a new timing cover?
Also how critical is it to use a new oil pump & water pump. I see nothing wrong with the old ones, but if money were no object I'd put new ones in. Unfortuneatly I didn't just win the lottery, & am getting the truck ready so I can go back to work after a long dry spell.

What would you do?

Dave

If it was mine, I'd replace it. You have it off now, why put it on to possibly fail later? Now that it's off, save the trouble and replace it. You can find new ones as cheap as $25.00 on e-Bay. That's how I got mine. The average price is about $50.00 to $60.00.

depends what 22re he'sswapping in, an 84 22re like from a celica will have a different cover than the 85 later 22re's. the pre85 covers can be difficult to find

It's a rebuilt engine from Oregon Engines, I specified that I needed an 87 compatible engine since that's what the donor is. The shipping company is looking for it as I type this so I haven't seen it yet.

i got a timing cover off of ebay once, made sure my threads on the bolts and the holes were perfectly clean, and stripped two oil pump bolts as well. also, the bottom passenger side bolt for the cover that goes thru the AC brakcet was WAY crooked....i ended up throwing the thing across the shop. get one from engnbldr.com, hes got em for about 65 shipped and theyre good quality. theres a million things that can go wrong in this area, you have oil, coolant, 2 pumps and all the timing components here. get a good one. also, id get a Haynes or an FSM(check the very first post in forum) and get the clearance specs for the oil pump, you may be able to reuse it. as for the water pump, if you havent had any cooling problems and the bearing seems ok, you can prolly reuse it as well. my 2 cents

'94 X-Cab, EB inside and a few fabbed parts. My wife: "How about you stay on the road?" Me: "I drive a Toyota truck, the road is OPTIONAL!"
