Getting the Wheeling Fever
hi all,
ok, picked up an '87 yj speedometer on ebay. the newer odometer has 154,000 miles on it... the correct mileage for my rig is 257,000. i want to set this newer odometer at 257,000 (a matter of pride that i've done 257,000 in this thing). really all i need to do is change the far left odometer dial from a 1 to a 2 give or take 3000 miles. i know i'm exempt, but still would like to make it as correct as possible.

i've pried the "can" open and am looking at the innards... now my question:

how do you change the odometer without screwing the delicate innards up? it looks like the odometer could pop out... but i'm afraid of using any sort of force to get it out. is there a pin or gear that needs to be pulled out first?
thanks-b

Rig up 2 vices next to each other. Put a drill with a square bit in one side, and the odometer in the other. Push the vices together until the square bit goes into the odometer drive. Turn the drill on and duct tape it one.
Problem solved.

do you mean to have the drill "run" the speedometer/odometer for 100,000 miles? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" />

Ok if you have it peeled and the little numbered wheels are still in it... Looking closely at the thing you can take the wheels out of the frame and then you can take the stops off of the axel.
You must keep all the wheels in place.. do not let them turn from where they are now. if you start spinning the thing around you will never get the numbers to line back up... so holding the wheels compactly in one hand you will gently turn the one wheel you need turned till your number comes in line. Then put the axel stops back on and reinstall. You can do this on the 2ed or 3rd one for sure... the first one is a learning experience. But it should turn out OK. Remember to only turn the one you want and not the rest or you will have a wave in the numbers when finished.

Look closely.. My son saw me doing it a few years back and he did the next 5 or 6 himself. I forget zackly what holds the axel in place but it is very obvious.
All of these odometers are very much the same. They have the braces to hold the numbers from spinning and going backwards. Don't let them go round either. It is not hard to do you just have to bite the bullit and do it.

thanks. got it figured out.

seems like a good time to grease the inside gears... an itty-bitty dab right out of the grease gun would work, don't you think?

Well I never have but whatever floats your boat. Just make sure the stuff (itty-bitty) you use will not harden over the years.

Body Damage is Cool
Any speedo shop can give you a sticker that goes on the door jam that states that you have done a odo change and at what mileage. Seems easier than "cracking" odos.
