Can anyone help me figure out whether the engine itself will bolt right up in the following configurations? Leaving the transmission question aside for a moment...

Years
84-86 2.2 (Y) 2.8 () 3.0 () 3.1 ()
87-91 2.2 () 2.8 (Y) 3.0 () 3.1 ()
92-98 2.2 () 2.8 (Y) 3.0 () 3.1 ()
99-02 2.2 () 2.8 () 3.0 (Y) 3.1 ()

Short of that, has anyone tried putting a 3.1 intercooled turbo in an 86 (or more mature) frame?

Thanks,

Tom

Hello Tom --

To begin, I would not leave transmissions aside due to the fact that they are unique to the diesels (and in my experience, identical save for the bellhousing anyway).

Also, I am not sure whether the 1987 chassis should be grouped with the 86 and earlier or 88 and newer models. I've generally heard 88-91 are similar, with removable crossmembers etc., with the front suspension changing somewhere in 89 (likely irrelevant to this discussion).

I think the thing to do might be to determine which frames are similar.

I can relay what I've heard re: 3.1/3.0 diesels: the 3.1 (4JG2) supposedly shares the same block with the 2.8, just with a larger bore. The bellhousings are supposedly the same. I've also heard that the 3.0 (4JX1 I believe) block/bellhousing is the same. No concrete proof of either.

I've also heard the 3.1 is to be avoided. The 3.0 is the most modern diesel of those you listed.

So, it would seem that the 3.1/3.0 would also drop into the 88-91 chassis. I think the 3.1 was fitted to the 92-98 (?) style Trooper, whether the gas/diesel mounts are the same is not known to me. Past experience would seem to indicate that the frame mounts would be the same.

I am no expert of the frames at all but it also depend on the country. The 3.1 was never introduced to S.A. The 2.8 was continued much longer. Hence my swap to the 2.8 (at a cost
Just a comment the 2.8 and 3.1 may have the same block but the heads are a lot different as is the injectors.

Maintenace is high but woth it.
Isuzu goes places!

Yup, the 2.8 and 3.1 turbo diesel engines have different cylinder heads and you are correct Stephan. You would probably know more given you have seen them up close and have got your hands dirty too. I for one have not. But the reason they are different is because the 2.8 4JB1-T is a direct injection diesel, while the 3.1 4JG2-T is an indirect injection diesel. This is the main difference with the heads, but also the size of the engines have to do with it too. Apparently Isuzu went to direct injection and then decided to go back with indirect injection like they had on the older 2.2 C223-T. Not sure exactly why they did it either? But I'm sure there was a reason.
