I installed a home made winch remote in the cab of my Jeep today and am having trouble locating a key part that would make things MUCH easier. I'm looking for some sort of 6 wire quick disconnect but I have no idea where to look. Anybody have any ideas? Weatherproof is a must. Thanks.

I located my solenoid box under the hood, on top of the wheel well to keep it high and dry. The winch control is kept in the glove box and the wire passes through the firewall to the solenoid box. I keep it unplugged most of the time for safety reasons. But plug it in if I'm going where I think I'll need it. The Control is in the cab and ready to go without having the wire strung over the hood like some of the guys do. It'll reach to the winch no problem if I want to work the winch from there. I know that's not an option for some winches but it works good for me. There's an electronics store in Pascagoula that probably has just what you're looking for. If you have one around there it's worth a try. I don't mean a Radio Shack either, try looking for electronic supplies in the yellow pages for a real supplier.

Jeepete, you just ran the switch pendant from the top of the wheel well to the glove box, right? I think it would be neat to have the option to use the switch pendant from outside the vehicle, or operate the winch from an inside cab permanent switch. I commonly operate the winch from inside the cab; probably 75 - 85% of the time. Even if you do operate the winch using the 12' switch pendant outside the cab, you may be in greater danger than if you were crouched behind the dash. The remote wireless switch from Ramsey looks like a good alternative, but I wonder how long that magnetic antenna will hold up to being stored and subjected to normal trail activities? I also have been thinking about installing a permanent switch in the cab. It would be neat to have a round flat knob installed on the dash that would have at least a Out/off/In/disconnect switch positions. Any auto electricians here that have recommendations to do this install?

I think it would be neat to have the option to use the switch pendant from outside the vehicle, or operate the winch from an inside cab permanent switch. That is correct. I had a handy hole in the firewall that the end of the pendant would fit through and the glove box being cardboard, was easy to penetrate. I don't keep anything else in the glovebox, gloves go in the console or the boonie box. In general I like to be where I can see that the cable is spooling properly and not getting damaged but believe me, I'll probably be the first to duck behind something when the load warrants it. My pennant is 12' long so I have about 8' to play with outside the window. More than enough to hide behind the whole Jeep if needed.

Most of my winching is done in the cab also, because I usually only need a few feet of pull to get me out. I just bought an extra remote from Tellico and cannibalized it for parts. I wish I would have taken pictures of the wiring job I did inside the winch, to give you an idea where to wire. The wires on the cord are the same color as the ones inside the winch, so I didn't have to track down what went where. I just added ring terminals to them and hooked them to the solenoids. I drilled a 9/32 hole in the back of the winch, deburred it, and ran the wire through there. I didn't even have to remove it from the vehicle. I looked for space on the dash to mount the switches but decided to make my own switch plate. If you have done any electrical work before it's not too bad. The switch on the left is main power, I put that in so I wouldn't bump the remote on accident. The green light indicates power is on and the red light is the heat warning, since I have the 9.5ti. The switch on the right is the in/out switch. I made the plate out of 2" aluminum angle, 1/8". When I figure out some sort of disconnect I'll just bolt the bracket to the bottom of the dash. About the only other thing I would like to do is add some sort of boot to the in/out switch, to keep water from getting in it when the top is off. Good thing about it is I can still use my corded remote in case I don't want to be in the jeep to winch. ![[Linked Image]](http://i5.tinypic.com/14o0lxu.jpg)

Great job, KC. Thanks for posting. Would you please explain how the heat light works; there must be a sensor somewhere, huh?

Actually I'm not sure. On the 9.5ti handheld remote there is a little led that goes on when the motor is overheating (I think), so I cut that off and added a larger one to add a little conformity to the panel (plus the one that came on it was insanely small.) I imagine there is a sensor somewhere in the motor assembly. When I had the winch apart all that was inside was the solenoid pack, but two wires, red and blue, run to a connector that leads to the motor. From what I remember, there are six wires. Red and blue run from the connector on the side of the winch to the motor. White is power, it runs to a bridge that's connected straight to the winch power wire. Green, black, and brown all run to the solenoids. All except red and blue I just added ring terminals, the red and blue I spliced and soldered. Not a hard job, but I took my time and finished the winch wiring in a few hours, if I had to do it again I could probably do it in less than one. If anybody decides to do this, I'll be more than happy to do what I can to help.
