Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hey Isuzoids,

Are there any reasons I should NOT consider using Slick 50 or other PTFE engine treatment? The engine in question is a 3.1 w/ 180k (never rebuilt).

Do the potential benefits outwiegh any potential risks? I ask because I've gotten a diverse number of opinions from locals: "Don't do it! It'll ruin your engine!", or "Do it! it'll increase your MPG!". I respect the opinions here.

Thanks.

Roll Me Over
I figured someone would have jumped in by now.

This sort of thing is discussed occasionally. A search on Slick 50 will find several hits. Here's one such thread:

DON'T use it...I used it in a hi mileage V6 and it jumped time a week later. They refused to pay for having it fixed, but I know it was the SLICK50!
If you want an engine clean, just do a kerosene clean. At oil change do 2 qts oil/2 qts kerosene and run for 10 min at
LOW RPM's. Then drain and refill w/ good quality oil. But you have hi miles, and it may remove deposits that are "beneficial" to an older engine. Good Luck!

I took apart my 3.1 a few months ago after 3 owners and 160K of hard abuse. The thing looked fine. No deposits, no strange bearing wear. I used the cheapest oil I could find and a purolator pure one filter every 4-5K miles. When I first had the engine, I used to use STP oil treatment but I don't think that does anything and would not buy stuff like that again. I also used rislone a few times when I thought I had noisy lifters. It was an exhaust leak actually. Just use oil.

I have mixed feelings about slick 50. I used it in my mitsu when I first got it (after break in) then again at 50k miles but not after that. Didnt hurt anything (had 143k on it when I sold it) but dont know if it helped. When my dad got the engine in his olds rebuilt (professional race engine shop) they said not to use it till after 10k miles break in cuz the stuff does work and the engine wont break in properly if used before then.

Others including dupont (inventers and makers of ptfe) say it does nothing and may even cause problems. So I dont know.

I do know I will never use STP in my engine. It will form little balls of gummy junk in the oil pan. I've seen that several times. For now I'll just stick with mobile 1 and sea foam cleanings.
