anyone know of any common problems in losing just the tail lights? The rear signals work, but the rear red lights don't work (and of course the brake lights don't work either)
Anywhere good to start with the trouble shooting?
A buddy of mine bought it and asked me about it, I haven't even seen it yet. It is a 2wd too.

Always check taillight probelms first to see if a trailer harness has been installed and/or removed. Next thing to check is to work forward from the lights and check looming -- IIRC there is a common connector that all the tallight leads feed through.

No 'common' problem with this of which I know... definitely no personal experience with it. I'll assume that he had already checked the bulbs and any fuses associated with that particular circuit before contacting you?

funny that you mention it, cause I don't remember him saying he checked the bulbs, but he did check the fuses. One thing pretty common out here too is the actual sockets corroding. I had to replace a few sockets on the little toyota.

Check the ground wire, for the wiring harness that is located in the rear of the vehicle. I had corrosion starting at the loop connector, where the grounding bolt attaches. The first part of the ground wire, coming off of the grounding bolt was also green with corrosion. Trimmed the wire till a good section was visible, and replaced the loop connector. That ended my problems. Just a thought.
