P0171= fuel trim lean, bank 1.

Did you by chance recently oil your K&N?

Its your MAF sensor, Try cleaning it with the recomended procedures under the 30K maint. list. otherwise I had the same code about 5 months ago, ended up replacing the whole sensor. These tacomas are really sensitive when it comes to foreign matter on the sensor, basically the sensor works on electrical resistance, i.e. the more dirt, dust etc.. that collects the hotter the resistance and thus throwing a code on the computer, try cleaning if not replace.

It could also be the front O2 sensor. They do go out and it's cheaper than a new MAF. But clean the MAF sensor first as suggested earlier since that's the cheapest option.

In front of the cat. Are you sure you know how to clean a MAF? Break an element and it's toast <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" />

BTW, K&N filters cause drivability problems. The oil gets on MAF sensor wires and insulates them, causing them to give false airflow readings.

There are also many studies that indicate that K&N air filters allow a lot more dirt to pass through than paper filters. Toyota makes about the best air filter out there, in my professional experience (I'm a licensed smog tech in Kalifornia and an ASE Master tech).

My best advise to anyone with a Mass AirFlow sensor (MAF) is to stick with the factory paper filter and stay as far away from K&N filters as humanly possible.
