Doug, I'd have to say most all of the Isuzu turbo diesel engines fitted originally in a truck or SUV will turn 33" tires in an off-road situation. Obviously the diesel engine will create the much more needed torque at a lower rpm (which you will no doubt be running at when going off road). To answer all your questions it kinda depends on what diesel engine you're looking at to go with. The only turbo diesel engine we saw here in the US was the C223-T in 86 and 87 for the Troopers. It can still be rebuilt with original parts, but from what I've heard and read it is not cheap to rebuild the engine (looking at at least $1,000). A good running C223-T probably will not equal up to the power of an equally good running GM 2.8 V6. If I had to guess I'd say you probably wouldn't like the switch if you did it. The V6 engine's 5-speed transmission will not be able to be used behind this turbo diesel engine. It requires its own diesel specific transmission, so it's best to get the diesel engine with trans as a package. The fuel injection pump and turbocharger can get rebuilt at any good diesel shop where they specialize in doing so. You will always have access to getting those two parts rebuilt as long as you own the vehicle. That is not the issue and usually costs at least $300 for injection pump to be rebuilt and probably almost the same or a little less for the turbocharger. If converting to diesel, the factory wiring harness would be a good idea to get to make it easier to finish. Now if you look at Isuzu turbo diesel engines outside of the US market, for instance the UK market, then you have an option of two other engines that may interest you. One is a 2.8 turbo diesel and the other is a 3.1 turbo diesel, both 4 cylinder engines that would likely take to modifying much better than the older 2.2 C223-T would. Bigger turbo and fuel pump upgrades would increase power and torque on those engines to a reasonable level and still have reliability at the same time. The 2.8 was used in 87-91 Troopers and the 3.1 used in 92-97 (or 98) Troopers, all over in Great Britain. Aren't they lucky? A good site to learn more about them and talk with British owners is
www.itocuk.co.uk Obviously you are going to be spending some money getting that kind of powerplant bought and delivered over here. There is always more info available here at the Diesels Forum too. Just do a search or get all threads viewed in the past year or two to learn much more. Hope I could be of help for you.
