Hey! How many rocks were harmed in this trail repair?
The funny thing about this event, the owner of the damaged idler went to Bakersfield to get a new one.
We sat around for a while and then the tinkering began. Grabbed batteries and pulled the broken part off the rig. Pics say the rest.
Was he surprised when he got back

before you say "reinforced" like that in quotes, have you ever seen one? if you held it in your hand you would have no doubt that it is really heavy duty. not for everyone, (i guess especially not for people who like to keep changing parts), but the thing is wicked beefy....

I didn't mean the quotes as in theyre not reinforced, just thats what people call them. I've seen pictures of them, and yes they are definently heavy duty.

I just can't justify the price when I can get a new one for free when mine breaks. It'd be different if it were something that was tricky to change, but an idler arm? For me its worth saving the couple hundred dollars.

to me it is just the fact that if it bends that often, the part that is being used is clearly not up to the task. i don't want to worry about that when i am out in the middle of nowhere, often by myself.

i think scerb is talking about it wearing out quickly, not the arm bending or breaking.
from my experiance, they only tend to break/bend when you smash them on something. usually something else in the steering breaks first.

big tires definitly wear them out in a hurry.
about 1 every 3-4 months for me when i had ifs.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I broke one on the 2nd of July while going over Jaws 2 on Blanca road (see Traildamage.com for trail description, though I didn't wheel with them). It's actually on video. You can see the passenger front wheel get pushed in, then you hear a "SNAP" and the arm breaks off the shaft. Broke in the exact same place as shown in the photos in this thread. It was a second one that I've had on and it was a Toyota arm. Fortunately, I'd just received a spare a couple of days before. Have a Downey Idler Gusset on the way now. Considering a TC idler.

I have gone through a few arms including one with a Downey idler gusset and bent all of them. The size and weight of the tires and lift are the major factors for me. I now run a Total Chaos idler arm and have had no problems. As Rodger said earlier, if it bends that often, the part that is being used is clearly not up to the task. I feel the same and would rather replace it with something better than what I have. Cost more, yes but I have a better peace of mind knowing that it wonÆt bend.
