A few questions about my Jeep.... #734077 06/28/06 05:20 AM

Need a Spot
First, I would like to thank anybody who replies in advance. I'm having a few issues that I would like to clarrify.

My first question is about the electric windows. It seems that the front passenger and drivers side windows have become very slow, and I am wondering if this may have anything to do with the window supports aren't working correctly or if this could have anything to do with the battery life. If this is normal, then I am a little dissapointed, but otherwise, not a big deal.

My next question, are parts from an XJ Cherokee interchangable with the parts of an XJ Wagoneer? I wouldn't mind getting doors with the crank windows rather then the elecric. I don't care if it looks goofy, because I want to get it painted soon anyway.

My last question is how much a new pulley deal for my AC and Smog stuff will run me? I know that I have to replace the belts, which will probably cost me about $25 or so is what my dad said, but I also want to get a new pulley. It makes really wierd noises when I accelerate, but never any other time, and when I put my screw driver up to it and my ear, I noticed that it sounded like a bearing was basically bouncing around in there. My dad says that it may be a while before it dies on me, but I wouldn't mind replacing it anyway, that way I can have the luxury of AC again.

Again, thank you.

Regarding the electric windows.... If you haven't noticed any other battery-related problems on your Jeep, the cause of the slow window operation is probably either dirty window tracks/linkage, or lack of lubrication. I'd suggest taking the inside cover off of the door and cleaning and lubing it and see if that changes anything.

Regarding the AC.... the pully itself is unlikely to be making the noise you're hearing with the screwdriver. it's likely a bearing on the shaft. Changing the pully won't fix that -- the compressor llikely has to be rebuilt (or exchanged for a rebuilt one). Unfortunately, AC compressors aren't cheap...

Hey Jimmeh, I've got an XJ with one real slow window. The others are not very fast but all work at the same speed so I reckon they are normal. I haven't tried to do anything about the slow one yet but here's what I think. Either voltage is low (easy to check), the window is binding or the motor is weak. Of these three possibilities I'd bet on the second one as the most likely (binding). If I decide to do anything about mine (it's not that annoying yet) first I will try spraying some silicone based lubricant or a little Armorall in the tracks in the upper frame. Then if that didn't help I would pull the door panel and see about lubing some other parts. I've found the Chrysler window motors to be very reliable though the drive gears tend to disintegrate on older vehicles. You can swap the motor with another to see if it's at fault if the lube job doesn't help.
About the A/C. My brother's XJ's A/C clutch went bad and made strange noises at odd times even though the bearing was OK and the A/C was not turned on. He shopped around for a new clutch assembly And ordered one from Partsamerica.com for something like $120. After it was a week or two overdue, he contacted the supplier and they said Oh, we cancled your order because the part is no longer available and , BTW, the price is now $180.

Nice of them to raise the price of a part they can't get!
Anyway, A friend has a couple of parts XJ's and he is donating a clutch to the cause. What I'm saying in too many words is, if it turns out you need a clutch assembly for your compressor a junk yard may be the best bet. Good luck with your new Jeep! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />
