Another side note: I tested a factory SR5 today (1985 pickup) - oil pickup was in a different location over my 1988 (lower). It's not a variable resistance sender, it does seem to do something with continuity like the FSM suggests.

For reference: I've found 3 types of senders. Left to right: 1) "Switch" idiot light. Do not use this with a pressure gauge (SR5) 2) pressure sender - From an 87 SR5 4 runner. FSM says that this should cause a test light to "blink" when grounding to it. 3) pressure sender.. This one is from an 86 22RTE turbo pickup, it's also similar in design to what I've been buying aftermarket. It won't work with my gauge cluster, but resistance does vary with oil pressure (lower resistance = more oil pressure) ![[Linked Image]](http://lakebox.dnsalias.com/photos/1988%204runner/engine/oil/oilpressuresender.jpg)

More notes.. for my application - unknown yr speedo/tach - square background - 110mph speedometer: Oil pressure starts to come up with 12-2 ohms resistance (low to high indications).
The sender I'm using has no pressure resistance of about 80 ohms... This would be one way to test.

The FSM indicates that a bulb grounded through the sending unit with 12V should FLASH... Which doesn't make a lot of sense if it's resistance based. The test light should flash, because the sender does not continuously ground the circuit... It pulses the grounding at different rates, thus the faster the pulse, the higher the temp on the gauge coil. This results in a higher reading on the gauge. Shorting the circuit causes too high of a temp on the coil, and permanently bends the coil, causing the needle to show very low pressure at max, and nothing below that.

I ran an aftermarket gauge by sunpro,25.00 came with new sender,I could not see spending 45. on a new sender, plus I think I get a more accurate reading wwith the aftermarket gauge. If you go that route make sure you do not get a mechanical gauge, those can be pita.
