Getting the Wheeling Fever
I hate leaks and have heard that the 22re it is relatively tough to keep the oil pan leakproof. Any tips on a "guaranteed" procedure/technique to keep it from leaking?

Also, I goofed and wasn't paying attention when I took the bolts out of the pan. Can someone take pity and tell me which oil pan holes the longer bolts go into?

Thanks folks.

Joa

Do what everybody with leaky oil pans doesnt take the time to do...correct the mounting surface of the pan. Tap all the dimples around the bolt holes back to flush, make sure the sealant groove is spotless then run your continuous bead of sealer in the proper location per the manual and then mount it up.

Two longer bolts?? Hmmmm are you meaning the studs that go midway down each side of the oil pan??

X2...I use "The Right Stuff" sealant. I can't say it's better than FIPG, but it's never let me down.

I used FIPG on mine and no leaks in 6+ years. Cleaning both surfaces well is key. I also used a small hammer to flatten out the areas around the bolt holes in the pan. With the FIPG (black for the oil pan), follow the insturctions closely. You need to let it set for a certain time before installing the pan. And don't over tighten the bolts.

This is the reason for most of the leaks, people do not do this. I have a small metal bar that I use as a dolly on the other side. This needs to be done if you use FIPG or it calls for a cork gasket. Also on cork gaskets, I always soak them in water to make them pliable.

I used the right stuff on mine...... Once cured you don't need the bolts anymore. I had to take it off a week later and had to resort to pounding a screw driver in to get it to let go. Then had to file down the nice score mark I made in the block..... But it's back on and still no leaks! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

gray RTV is all i need for oil pans. actually, the 20R/22R/22RE engines are all very easy to keep leak free compared to some engines, as they use a 1 piece main seal with a bolt on retainer and a totally flat oil pan surface.
