I don't drive the Trooper a lot lately due to gas prices. Today I hooked up the trailer and ran down to Lowes to pick up some fence materials. I noticed that both my gas gauge and the temperature gauge were no longer reading anything.
The truck is a '91 Trooper with a 3.4 replacing the 2.8.

Guess what Jim , if one isn't working , neither will work How do I know this? I just go my temp guage working again after taking the fuel guage out of the cluster. For some reason some of the wiring is joined on the circuit board. It should be interesting to try and track down which guage went on you.If you need to know the wiring on it let me know , I have the shop manual , it helps

You know...it could have just been cold and you were low on gas.
My gas gauge seems to be chronically pointing south of F most of the time.

The tank is about 3/4 full (I reset the trip meter each time I refill). I drove a total of perhaps 20 minutes, so I don't think temperature is the issue.
I did notice the last time that I drove the truck that the fuel gauge wasn't working, but then it started to work after only a mile or so, so I guess I have a starting point my investigation.

The yellow/black wire is for your temp guage , and then theres 2 going to your fuel guage , I think it was yellow/red and yellow/green.Not 100% sure as my manual isn't here at the moment. But I am 100% sure on the yellow/black being for the temp guage. If your guage was going on you before , that would be where to start , and if its not your circuit board , then once the fuel guage is working again your temp guage should go again too.The wires for the sending unit are on the same plug as your pump.
First things I would check are the wires still in the harness pins , then the nuts on the back of the guage , make suyre they have a good connetion to the circuit board still.Other than that , start tracing your wires.Oh , maybe one good place to check is your ground by the tank.Thats also where part of your wires from the tank to the guage go , and a little water in there can wreak havoc.

Are you using the stock gauge cluster? Im assuming so. If you need one, im parting a Troop out.

Unfortunately, the cluster for the 2.6 and the 2.8 are different.

I hate intermittent problems! My gauges haven't failed since the original post.

I had the same problem awhile back, there were some posts and someone mentioned dielectric grease on the connectors. I never got around to trying it since mine have worked for the last 8 months or so! It seems to be a somewhat common gremlin, don't know if anyone has ever really figured it out.
