Getting the Wheeling Fever

Okay, so the rear end on my 1992 4x4 5-speed stnd cab stnd bed 22-RE is going out and is declining quickly. It feels like I'm driving against the wind all the time and it seems a little more windy every day...lol. I jacked up the rear and put it in gear and the rear end sounds like...well I don't know what it sounds like, but it doesn't sound good at all. It's also started to sling fluid everywhere, which is a lovely smell on the exhaust.I'm currently unemployed and low on the funds so I'm hoping some kind soul in SoCal can hook a guy up with a deal of some sorts. I hate feeling so desperate and being so broke, but I guess that's just how this crazy world works sometimes. If anybody can help me out, I would be forever greatful. Thanks.

I know that I could replace that seal, however, there is more serious problems going on in there. When I start from a dead stop and make a turn (especially to the right) I get some slippage and a clunk or two when it catches. It even does it sometimes starting from a dead stop going straight and every time I shift I get the clunk sound as well. This rear end has been going out for some time, but I have just been babying it. Now though it has 240,000 miles and is getting ready to retire whether I like it or not. I have had the motor out a couple times, done the clutch a couple times, done wheel bearings, done the brakes about a million times, but I don't know squat about differentials and what it looks like in there. What could be happening in there by what I have described here? Any opinions?

You may have a chipped gear tooth or two in there, probably as a result of the pinion gear loosening up. It is a piece of cake to swap out the differential (3rd member) with one from a junkyard, no special tools are needed. Just find one with the same gear ratio and you are set.
