I have always thought about the possibility of installing a small household or rv ac unit in the rear sliding window during the summer months. It would be a lot less hassle and cheaper than installing a complete auto ac system. You may need a power inverter but a heavy duty alt would probably do fine with it.

I actually think it would be kinda slick.

Anyone ever seen this, what do you think?

i have seen it and it would work.(similar at least) if it were me to attempt this project, id cut out a piece of the rear cab wall and mount it low in the bed. the same piece that is cut out could easily be modified to mount back in place with a gasket of sorts to seal it.

Well, no not likely to work. If your AC unit draws 10 amps @ 120 volts you'll need 100 amps @ 12 volts, PLUS some since no inverter is 100% efficient.

Since presumably, you still want all your other electrical stuff to work, you'd need an alternater capable of putting out 100 amps more than your current one can (OK, I know you aren't using 100% of your alternator's capability now, but you get the idea, I hope).

Now what I've always though might work is to use the same type of system used in propane fired refigerators, but use the waste heat from the cooling system or exhast system instead of propane....

Dave

You think Toyota's have cold AC check out my first 4x4 i had when I was a teen. In the late 80's, my mom worked for a vending company. That would go around to job sites and sell different types of food. They had a AC unit on top of the truck to keep some of the food cold. I had a black 79 Dodge Ramcharger that would get so hot you could roast nuts in it. I took one of the AC compressors off one of the vending truck's that was broken down. Wired it up and ran the cooling hose right into the top of the Dodge. I could get it so cold in the cab that it would start to snow . I wish I had some pixs of that truck, it would be hard to pick out the AC compressor unit because i built a light bar and roof rack around it. You could write your name in the frost on the windows. Now thats cold AC

Man, I put that photo right up there with the car running around here with a cardboard grill and one headlight mounted in the middle.

I'd be concerned about said piece of equipment flyin' up front while standing on the brakes myself........

On the mod....>coff< Fix the factory stuff as mentioned >coff<

Is your name Earl, and do you have a brother named Randy?

If so, I think your ex-wife is hot...in a slutty, skanky way.
