I've been reading quite a bit about Zuk and his 5.71 gear installs. It's got me thinking. I was planning on running 5.29's and 36" Iroks. But, my 4Runner is going to be my new tow rig for my new toy, a small 1500 lb. pop up tent trailer Green Grin I'm thinking I'm going to need every hp possible to tow that thing around Colorado up and down the mountain passes. Are 5.29's going to cut it? How do you guys feel about Zuk setup 5.71's? I've heard nothing but bad about 5.71 gears but Zuk has had quite a bit of good luck with US Gear 5.71's and a good, high quality gear install.

Any help would be great since I was planning on having my friend help me install the 5.29's but it would cost me almost $500 extra to have Zuk setup two 3rd's.

I'm willing to take Zuk at his word. If he says 5:71's are ok, that's enough for me.

If Mad Max had a 4runner...

i second that. if you want to try to set up a set, do the front yourself and let Zuk do the rear. it is worth the $ to know that they are set up correctly.

That's a good idea! Thanks for the replies!

Roll Me Over
Read Zuk's page quickly. I don't question any of his conclusions about the strenght of the ring nor the available torque; I don't think anyone does. I question the strength of the pinion gear. So I say go 5.29's.

You realize you're talking about the man who converted a Toyota to spring-UNDER and mounted a coil on top of the differential, right? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

ZUK seems like a really good guy with some... er... eccentric ideas, but you'll never be able to convince me that 5.71s can take the same pounding that a set of 4.88s can. I've just seem too many 5.71s die, and I've killed two sets of 5.29s miyself. I know what the pattern looked like on my gears, and 2 of the 5.71s I know of that destroyed themselves.

Then again, for the kind of wheeling most of the guys on 4x4wire do, 5.71s will work just fine. If you've never broke a CV before you ditched IFS, and have never popped an axleshaft, they'll do just fine for you.

Craig is right on....let me put the rear gears in and you, Volcom, do the front. I feel at this point that the highest quality gear for the Toyota application is PRECISION. NOw that I've had a chance to do more of the Precisions I can see the true quality and I am impressed.

36" tires on a tow rig....I've done that, too.:D Your clutch will appreciate it

....Actually, as far as gearing change....571 vs 529....they are about an 8% difference so your call on what you want on the highway.
PRECISION's cost a little more but they are the choice of the choosey smile so I am stocking up.

now that's funny right there, i don't care who you are!

i think that alot of the gear strength comes down to brand and install. tntoy is right, if you are going to beat the living crap outta your truck (ie, climbing and letting it hop up and down on the rock), i would go with something like 4:56s and get lower transfer case gears, and serious axle upgrades, no matter what brand or who sets them up. on the other hand,, if you don't plan on that kinda of driving regularly, good quality, well set up 5:71s should work on the trail as well as for towing. just my .02

Zuk, where's the best place to get 5.71 Precision gears?? What do you charge for a gear install with an Aussie locker?
