On my '99 Sporty I've found a few times upon hard braking [ just didn't see the other car until the last second ], one of the front tyres lock up completely depending on weight distribution, but the rears don't even want to have a go.I thought with ABS that you should either feel some pulsing as they try to prevent skidding or at least they should have a go at slowing you down. It basically feels like the front brakes are doing all the work so I just wondered if anyone else has similar problem. It's just that if the front locks up and the other wheels aren't helping you slow down then you have no slowing or steering, making for some tense moments.

AFAIK ABS is only on the rear wheels...useful, eh???

The end theat would benefit the most from ABS doesn't get it......

you would think that a car company that has been around for so long would have figured out that the ABS needs to be on the front.

First, are you sure your Sportage is equiped with ABS? On North American Sportages it was an option. I don't know about OZ Sportages.

Second, if your Sportage has ABS it is on the front and rear.

On the early (pre 2000??) models it was standard out here. Pretty sure it is 2 channel (rear only), not 4 channel.

I agree with Gary, it is only on the rear in OZ. I found out the hard way when dodging a sheep on fine gravel. No matter how hard I push on the pedal, I haven't once felt what has been described as the ABS shudder when it tries to compensate. Maybe the rear drums are just too weak to have any locking power??? That's what I call a simple ABS system.
I guess if OZ is the only country to have rear ABS then it's pointless asking anyone over there about the problem.
I wonder if it can be bypassed to make it a standard braking system, hence giving the rear a bit of ooompffff?
Not that I'd try it myself of course, it's one thing to try and make it go faster yourself, but making it stop quicker is playing with danger!!

Should be some sort of speed transducer mounted near all the wheels, telling the system what speed the wheels are doing. Usually some sort of serrated ring with a coil next to it.
