Getting the Wheeling Fever
Anybody have any tried and true "easy" methods to wash the engine compartment without any electrical/computer issues? Would pressure washing harm any components?

GREASED LIGHTING is your anwser. Make sure the car is turned off. spray it on all surfaces. let soak for about 10- 15 minutes rinse with light hose water. avoid the ever popular power washing. THe lighting seems to reall work well on the uwharrie mud as well

I've always powerwashed (car wash) the engines in all my vehicles with no trouble. The only problem I've ever had was getting some water in the distributer cap, a squirt of wd-40 takes care of that easily.

I've done it to the engine in my rodeo probably 8 times since I bought it last september, never a problem.

For those of us in apartments using a hose to wash with isnt an option.

I just spray everything with Simple Green, a relatively environmentally friendly de-greaser, and then hose it off. Wont get it sparking clean, but takes care of most of the dirt/grease without sending solvents into the storm drain.

Another one for Simple Green. Makes it smell nice too You kinda have to scrub some of the harder stuff, but it works pretty good for how cheap it is.

For those of you running with the interior still in, simple green works well on seats and carpet too :-D.

I was just going to ask about this ( i still have mud in my engine bay from my last trip) and I wasnt sure which route to take. I was kinda skeptical on the power washing. I didnt want to ruin my alt or any other electronics. I think im gonna try the greased lightning approach.

Water wont hurt the Alt. as much as mud or silty water. I actually pressure wash the engine bay after eaither working on it with power steering fluid everywhere or other nastiness. I just steer clear of the Distributor mostly.

Another thing that helped me is I used to have a problem with where I would go through some mud, some connectors got water in them and my truck ran like . I went through EVERY connector and put di-electric grease in it. No problems now!

I did lose and AC compressor bearing by power washing. I think that it actually drove the fine silt that I had driven though into the bears. it squeeled something god awful for about a year before I rplaced it. THis could also happen to any of your pullies as well. Id try one of the sprays witha hose over power washing just my 2 cents

Thanks guys. I've been putting this off since Uwharrie in April and I'm getting tired of seeing all the dirt. I'll try the Greased Lightening or Simple Green approach. I've always been pretty sketical about pressure washing. By the way, is Greased Lightening available at discount retailers like Wal-Mart?
